Delaware South won a pair of games to reach the Carpenter Cup softball finals only to fall a run short in the title game on Wednesday afternoon.
Lehigh Valley (Pa.) scored twice in the first inning before holding off the Downstaters, 2-1, in the championship game of the regional all-star tournament played at Philadelphia’s FDR Park.
Delaware South, which was limited to three hits, scored its run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly before the rally ended.
Delaware South was trying to capture the title for the sixth time. It finished 4-2 overall in the event, going 2-1 on Monday and 2-1 on Wednesday.
In the quarterfinals, Delaware South edged Delaware County (Pa.), 6-5, before then topping Midd Penn, 7-5. The Downstate squad won four games in a row after losing its opener on Monday.
Lake Forest High’s Carah Sumpter was the starting pitcher for Delaware South in Tuesday’s title game.
The title was the third for Lehigh Valley and its first since 2008.
The 19th-annual tournament, which includes 16 teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, is sponsored by the Phillies.
