The 2024 commencement season has been one of the most contentious in recent memory.
Everyone is concerned about mental health today — from Generation Z to college administrators to local Rotarians.
Sports betting is having a big moment across the United States. While gambling on sports has been legal for decades in countries such as the U.K., it wasn’t until 2018 that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could legalize sports betting. Before then, sports betting had been permitted only in Nevada.

History provides ample evidence that governments are not very proficient at managing processes and delivering services. This is not a criticism of hardworking people in government, but their efforts are often thwarted by an overwhelming tendency toward inefficiency.

Regarding the article, “Previous Dover City Council president could be censured for ethics complaint,” by Benjamin Rothstein: It looks to me like there is more than meets the eye with this situation.

The Downtown Dover Partnership is gathering input from residents of the capital city about the future of the Loockerman Street area. What are your suggestions? Is more retail the answer, or less? How should crime be deterred? How should Dover’s history be incorporated?
OPINION
With high inflation, many people are not able to keep pace with their monthly rental payments and other bills because of their low-wage incomes or their low “fixed” incomes. We are seeing hundreds more people in the Georgetown area who have fallen out of our economic system.

Memories of Brown v. Topeka Board of Education remind us of our role in writing the first drafts of history.
We fully endorse the passage of House bills 70 and 301, two pieces of legislation currently under consideration in Delaware. HB 70 seeks to repeal the death penalty in Delaware, while HB 301 is an amendment to the state constitution, prohibiting execution as a form of punishment.
I think we all agree that we really appreciate our teachers. But one segment that I believe doesn’t get the respect it deserves is child care teachers/workers.
The spring issue of the University of Delaware Magazine hails the entrance of Blue Hen football into the NCAA’s Division I (FBS) level and notes that the cost of admission into Conference USA has been “funded by the generosity of Blue Hen donors.” Sports writers estimate that cost at $6 million, and that’s just to get in the door.

Measures moving through the Delaware General Assembly could substantially change how hospitals in the state do business by creating the Diamond State Hospital Cost Review Board. It is definitely beneficial to be an illegal immigrant under the Biden administration. Joe Biden is giving the store away. He allows migrants great beneficial status, instead of them becoming lawful American citizens. A real free-for-all party under Joe Biden.

I am writing in response to Jordan McClements’ recent Opinion in the Greater Dover Independent (“1.8% decrease in overdose deaths is not political victory").

Perhaps if more citizens ran for office who have leadership skills or, more importantly, if more citizens bothered to show up and vote, Dover might improve. Our last mayoral election had less than 2,000 citizens even bother to show up and actually cast a vote.

Many thanks to Delaware Rep. Bryan Shupe, R-Milford, for explaining some of the hidden details of the proposal for a hospital financial review board (“Bill would allow state control of local hospitals”).

Donald Trump said in a recent interview that he will only accept 2024 election results “if everything’s honest.” In at least two separate interviews before the 2020 election, Trump refused to “commit to a peaceful transfer of power” if he lost.

Every May, the nation observes Older Americans Month. The 2024 theme is “Powered by Connection,” which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being.
