Youth Fishing Derby returns this Saturday

A tradition for more than 50 years, children are invited to see what they can catch at Wicomico County Recreation & Parks’ Youth Fishing Derby at Salisbury City Park. 

The derby will be held Saturday, June 3, and is open to youngsters 15 and under.

Fishing begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. Check-in begins at 8 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded in categories including most fish caught, most unusual catch and biggest fish.

Fishers should bring their own rods and bait. Snacks will be provided for youth participants.

Fund-raiser for St. Jude planned June 8

The NAI Coastal and Gillis Gilkerson teams are stepping behind the bar in support of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Enjoy cocktails at Brew River's Dock Bar on Thursday, June 8, from 5 to 8 p.m.

All proceeds will be donated to St. Jude's in the name of Ashley Gilkerson.

Canadian food in MAC’s Lunch Around the World series

What in the world is poutine? Traditional poutine consists of French fries with cheese curds and gravy, an enormously popular dish in Eastern Canada and upstate New York.

Poutine, with grilled chicken and steak, will be on the menu for MAC’s June Lunch Around the World. Rounding out the meal will be asparagus and a shortbread cookie.

Orders are due at noon on Friday, June 16; meals can be picked up on Wednesday, June 21, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the MAC lobby.

The cost is $12 per meal. Proceeds will benefit MAC’s Meals on Wheels.

Pollinator Garden Tour planned for June

The third annual Pollinator Garden Tour, hosted by the Lower Shore Land Trust, will be held on June 23-24 at eight private gardens in Wicomico County.

Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the properties and the pollinator gardens and meadows and learn how these homeowners are helping combat pollinator decline while beautifying their yards with native plants.

This annual event is held by the Lower Shore Land Trust in support of its mission to aid in protecting and decreasing the loss of crucial habitat for pollinators across our region, while providing the members of the community the opportunity to learn simple ways to make a big impact, even in their own back yards.

The tours are Friday and Saturday, June 23-24, from 8 a.m. to 4 pm, one or both days.

This year’s tour gardens range from an Urban Forest Garden, a Mount Hermon Farm Garden, a converted lawn, a meadow garden, to two Salisbury gardens opposite each other that provide a “street crossing” for pollinators, a garden and a chicken paradise, all providing a community for pollinators.

As a visitor to these private pollinator paradises, attendees can participate in mini-workshops covering such topics as rain barrel installation, soil health and testing for the homeowner, spotting and handling invasive species, bird watching and more.
