Salisbury Mayor Jake Day, who is currently deployed with the Army in Africa, was promoted from Captain to the rank of Major during a ceremony on Monday near Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, by Maj. Gen. Lapthe C. Flora.

Day’s wife, Liz, his parents Randy and Debbie Day, and City Administrator Julia Glanz joined by Zoom for the ceremony which was held at midnight, Eastern Standard Time.

With 12 years of military service, and on his first combat deployment, Day is part of the unit supporting operations in Somalia, providing force protection and crisis response throughout East Africa and building strategic partnership in Djibouti.

He left Salisbury in June and is about halfway through his 11-month tour.

He is one of three U.S. mayor deployed to combat zones during their terms in office. Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 while in office. North Ogden, Utah, Mayor Brent Taylor was killed in 2018 while serving in Afghanistan.

Day enlisted in the Army in 2009. He is a graduate of Information Operations Qualification Course, Maneuver Captain’s Career Course, Armor Basic Officer Leaders Course, Officer Candidate School and Basic Combat Training at Fort Benning, Ga.

He has previously served as the Senior TAC Officer at the Officer Candidate School, a Platoon Leader and Executive Officer in the 158th Cavalry Regiment and as Aide-de-Camp to Brigadier General Peter Hinz, the Commander of the Maryland Army National Guard.

In Africa, Day is working as an information operations officer with Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa in a 12-country region with a focus on fighting terrorist groups al-Qaeda and Al-Shabaab.

His National Guard unit, the 110th Information Operations Battalion, is on ongoing rotation to support the effort in Africa and Day said he knew he would eventually be deployed. He is part of the 13th team from the battalion to be sent overseas. The unit is tasked with integration and synchronization of Information-Related Capabilities, including cyber, psychological operations, electronic warfare, civil affairs and others.

Day’s promotion ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Brigadier General Damian T. Donahoe, CJTF-HOA Deputy Commanding General; Command Master Chief Alex Hebert, CJTF-HOA Command Senior Enlisted Leader; Colonel Jennifer Mykins, CJTF-HOA Director of Operations; and Major Lesley Dowdle, CJTF-HOA Director of Information Operations.
