PRINCESS ANNE — The Waters Edge Condominium Association in Crisfield is proposing the construction of additional shoreline restoration projects and is seeking a grant for design from Maryland’s Chesapeake and Coastal Service (CCS), a division of the Department of Natural Resources.

The latest application, which has unanimous support from the County Commissioners, seeks to add sand and grasses to eroded areas, and to move and add riparian rocks to provide stability.

The privately-owned 7-acre waterfront community off Lorie C. Quinn Drive consists of 38 residential units. Built in 2005 its shoreline has deteriorated with erosion threatening land under the townhomes and pier on the western and southern end.

Since October 2008 the state has allowed only “environmentally friendly” plant and natural buffers on waterfront property unless a waiver is granted or if a hard buffer or bulkhead were previously in place. Waters Edge has a living shoreline adjacent to the city pier and there was extensive restoration and mitigation following superstorm Sandy which struck in October 2012.

The condominium association last year received a similar endorsement from the county for a design grant request but CCS turned it down, said Doug Taylor, county administrator.
