TidalHealth doctor residency program wins approval for summer start

Posted

TidalHealth, a 125-year-old health system based in Salisbury was recently accredited to start its first residency training program in Internal Medicine.

As a part of this process, TidalHealth began accepting applications from medical students who have already graduated medical school or will in June 2022. It received more than 2,300 worldwide applications. From those, just 240 qualified candidates were selected for virtual interviews conducted from mid-October 2021 until early February 2022.

The selection committee reviewed each candidate’s overall performance and prepared a certified ranking list that was officially submitted to the National Resident Matching Program on Feb. 24 by Dr. Hameem Kawsar, Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at TidalHealth.

Joining in this historic occasion was Steve Leonard, President and CEO of TidalHealth; Dr. Simona Eng, Interim Chief Medical Officer and Associate Program Director of the residency program; and other faculty members.

The residency candidates will submit their preferred choices to NRMP and a computer algorithm will match the candidates with a residency program. When NRMP publishes those results, the TidalHealth residency program will know the names of the 10 inaugural candidates. The matched candidates will begin their three-year training in Internal Medicine with TidalHealth physicians in July.

TidalHealth—which includes TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, TidalHealth Nanticoke, TidalHealth McCready Pavilion, and an expansive physician network with more than 30 locations, 250 plus providers in nearly 25 different specialties—have joined forces to offer the best in patient-centered care. The health system provides a full range of services, including neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, joint replacement, emergency/trauma care, comprehensive cancer care, women’s and children’s services, wound care and clinical trials and research through its Richard A. Henson Research Institute and as a member of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network.

By combining knowledge and sharing evidence-based protocols, TidalHealth is able to offer the best healthcare on Delmarva. Primary care physicians and specialists are collaborating every day to personalize the patient experience, and new technologies and treatment options continue to define the standard for safer care, faster recoveries and better outcomes.
