Sheriff to address AARP Chapter

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis will be the guest speaker when AARP Chapter 1276 meets Thursday, Sept. 1, at MAC Inc. in Salisbury

Doors open 12:30 p.m.; the meeting starts at 1 p.m.

Elected November 2006 and now serving his fourth consecutive four-year term, Lewis leads a staff of 94 sworn deputies, and another 52 civilian personnel who provide judicial protection to our courts, traditional law-enforcement services to our citizens and unprecedented protection to the county’s communities.

MAC Inc. is located at 909 Progress Circle, behind the Holly Center complex off Snow Hill Road.

Pedal Poker Run to benefit Allen Lions

The Allen Lions Club will hold an annual “Pedal Poker Run” on Saturday, Sept. 17.

This is an event for bike riders of all ages and offers two routes through the beautiful countryside around Allen – either 12 miles or 18 miles. The distance makes no difference to the award of prizes.

The ride will begin and end at the Wicomico Yacht Club in Eden.  Registration will begin at 10 a.m.

At various stops along the ride, bikers will be able to draw a total of five playing cards. At the finish, the best poker hands will be determined.

The winning hand will win $500. Second-place will be $250, third $150, fourth $100, and fifth $50.

The entry fee is $25 per cyclist.

Additional poker hands will be possible for $20 each.

Proceeds benefit the many charitable activities of the Allen Lions Club.

 SU fund-raising campaign to be celebrated

Salisbury University lights up the night Friday, Sept. 2, to celebrate the successful completion of “We Are SU: The Campaign for Salisbury University.”

The largest fund-raising initiative in campus history, the campaign exceeded its $75 million goal at the end of June. Funding will benefit student scholarships, classroom equipment and other enhancements.

The celebration begins at 6 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium, as SU football takes on Albright College. A laser light show follows on the field. The evening also includes giveaways, games and other family-friendly activities.

Admission is $7; $5 for SU alumni and non-SU students; $3 for children ages 5-15; free for children under 5 and current SU students, faculty and staff with Gull Card.

Women Supporting Women hosting Walk for Awareness

For the 21st year, Women Supporting Women will be hosting their Walk for Awareness at the Christian Community Center at 408 Gordy Road in Salisbury on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Survivors and friends are encouraged to form teams to walk in honor or in memory of someone in their life who has been impacted by breast cancer, or just walk for fun.

Registration begins on-site at 8:30 a.m.; ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. Fees are $30 per walker. Registration includes a T-shirt (for registrations received by Sept. 8) and a bottle of water.

Furry four-legged friends are welcome, as well for $5 per dog and will receive a goodie bag, bandana and AYCD (all you can drink) water.

The 21st Annual Walk for Awareness will include several food trucks, vendor tables, a dove release and more. Awards will also be given for top fund-raising team, top fund-raising individual, largest team and best decorated team.

Adult kickball league expands with new fall session

 Wicomico Recreation & Park’s adult kickball league is expanding and will now offer a fall session.

Men and women 18 and older are invited to sign up. Players of all skill levels are welcome. Games begin Sept. 12 and are played on Monday evenings at the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex.

Registration is $300 per team and is open until Sept. 2. Teams registering after Sept. 2 will have to pay a late fee of $25 per team. Games require a minimum of six fielders and a minimum of three female players.

5K Run/Walk for Wor-Wic to be held Oct. 1

The Wor-Wic Community College Foundation is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk, along with the 2022 Law Enforcement Team Cup Challenge, on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m., at the college campus in Salisbury. Check-in and registration begin at 8 a.m.

The 5K run and one-mile walk are open to the public. The Law Enforcement Team Cup Challenge is open to employees of any law enforcement agency who will compete in teams of two to three runners for the Law Enforcement Team Cup, currently held by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

All 5K runners and law enforcement team members will be eligible for first-place overall male and female trophies, as well as medals for the top three male and female finishers in eight different age categories.

The first 100 registrants will receive an event shirt. All participants are invited to stay afterward for the awards ceremony, refreshments, music and fun activities for the whole family.
