The menu includes oyster fritter sandwiches, soups, chicken salad and a bake table.

Bethesda UM Church to host Tenebrae event

 Bethesda United Methodist Church will present “Two Faces in the Shadows” on Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

This is a dramatic dialogue for Tenebrae written by Paul D. Duke and Jeff Allee. In this play, the events of the Passion are remembered and discussed in a dialogue between Peter (played by Stewart Soper), and Judas Iscariot, (played by Orville Nichols) in the Upper Room.

A free will offering will be taken to support Salisbury Urban Ministries and Hope Inc. in memory of Tom Clark.

German food featured in MAC lunch series

Grilled beef bratwurst! Mashed potatoes! German chocolate cake!

Robust German food is on the menu for MAC's next Lunch Around the World series event.

Orders are due by noon on Friday, April 15; orders can be picked up between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at MAC on Wednesday, April 20.

The meal features grilled beef bratwurst with onions and peppers, mashed potatoes, seasoned red cabbage with apples, and German Chocolate Cake.   

The cost is $12 per meal. Proceeds will benefit MAC’s Meals on Wheels.

Parents’ Night Out set for April 14

 Parents: Need some extra time to get some chores done, go on a date or take a nap? Drop the kids off at the Wicomico Civic Center for Wicomico County Recreation & Parks’ Parents’ Night Out event, set for Thursday, April 14.

Kids will enjoy a movie, snacks and other activities.

Parents’ Night Out is happening on an early-dismissal day for students in Wicomico County Public Schools. Drop off will take place at the Civic Center from 2 to 2:30 p.m. and pick up will be from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

It is open to kids ages 5-12, and the cost is $20 per child. The children will be supervised by Kids Klub childcare staff.

“We are excited to offer Parents’ Night Out events to provide activities for children on half-days for Wicomico County Public Schools,” said Fallon Jackson, Program Director for Childcare and Environmental Education. “We know parents have a lot going on – take some time to yourselves while Kids Klub provides the fun.”

SU Senior Art event begins April 18

Salisbury University senior art majors will display their work during the 66th biannual Senior Exhibition “Crossroads: Navigate the World,” April 18 through May 7 at SU Art Galleries Downtown and the University Gallery of Fulton Hall.

A reception and awards ceremony for fine art will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 22, at SUAG Downtown.

A reception and awards ceremony for graphic design will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 29, in the University Gallery. Light refreshments will be served at each reception.

“Crossroads” is diverse in style, media and content as various mediums – including photography, ceramics, metalwork, embroidery, graphic design, drawing, painting, and new media – intersect to create original works of art.

United Way golf event is Friday, May 6

United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore is bringing back the United Way Open Golf Tournament on Friday, May 6.

This year, players will spend the day on the links at Green Hill Country Club in Quantico. Golfers will enjoy a socially distanced afternoon of networking, food and drinks, and fun incentives along the beautiful Wicomico River.

The year’s event will be a scramble that will kick off with registration and a bagged lunch at 11 am followed by a shotgun start at noon.

Princess Anne to host Spring Fling

Welcome spring with friends, family, and visitors -- spend the day outside at Manokin River Park, in downtown Princess Anne.

Spring Fling is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The free community event will take place in Manokin River Park, located at 11840 Somerset Avenue. A variety of family-friendly activities are planned, including morning exercise, an egg hunt for children, and a scavenger hunt.

Music will be provided throughout the day. Food will be available. Vendors and exhibitors will be on hand, featuring a variety of locally made wares, home decor, gifts, art, apparel, community resources and more.

Carozza to address Fruitland Chamber April 20 

 Maryland State Sen. Mary Beth Carozza is the featured speaker at the Fruitland Chamber of Commerce luncheon on April 20. The meeting starts at noon at Adams Tap & Grill House, located at South Fruitland Boulevard, just south of Cedar Lane in Fruitland.

The price is $13 per person tax and tip included. The event is open to the public.

Payments are made at the door, but attendees must register no later than April 19.

Genealogy research workshop begins April 27

The Westside Historical Society will offer its annual workshop on researching family history/ genealogy starting in April and lasting through mid-May.

Five in-house classes will begin in Mardela Springs on Wednesday, April 27, and end on May 11, plus three visits to local libraries — each having strong genealogy collections — to be scheduled.

The workshop’s focus is on Lower Eastern Shore families, but classes emphasize the skills and basic knowledge needed to continue research on a broader scope.

The workshop is taught by Ray Thompson and Sylvia Bradley, both retired Salisbury University History professors and founders of The Nabb Center.

A workbook is included in the registration cost of $75, plus free use of the Westside Historical Society’s Reference Library during the workshop and after.

Bethesda United Methodist Church in Salisbury is hosting the next monthly luncheon on Thursday, April 21, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Poplar Hill Mansion Festival coming May 1

The award-winning Annual Poplar Hill Mansion Festival will be held Sunday, May 1, from noon to 4 p.m. at the mansion on Elizabeth Street in Salisbury.

The daylong event celebrates the Federal Period history of Salisbury and will include War of 1812 re-enactors: Chesapeake Independent Blues, music and dancing of the Federal period, educational displays, a children's activity tent with crafts and games, and a May Pole to celebrate May Day.

There will also be a tented Market Square with vendors selling handcrafted items.

Tours of Poplar Hill Mansion will also be available throughout the day and volunteers will be wearing period dress. This is a free event with parking located in the Bethesda Methodist Church parking lot on the corner of North Division and Isabella streets in the Newtown neighborhood. 

Ride For Awareness returns May 14

For the 18th year, nonprofit organization Women Supporting Women will host “Ride For Awareness” on Saturday, May 14.

Tickets for the motorcycle ride are $25 for a single rider, and $35 for a rider and passenger. This ticket price includes a commemorative event patch for the first 100 registrants.

The guided ride will begin at Women Supporting Women's offices at 1320 Belmont Ave. in Salisbury and end at Berlin American Legion Post No. 123 Boggs Disharoon at 10111 Old Ocean City Blvd. in Berlin.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. and kickstands will be up at 10 a.m. Lunch and beverages will be available for purchase.

 Drive-thru chicken salad sale is April 30

 The Delmar Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary members are taking orders for 

homemade chicken salad to be handed out Saturday, April 30.

The hours for pick up at the fire department are from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. There will be someone in the parking lot to direct you through the firehouse.

Chicken salad will be available for $8 per pint and $13 per quart. The sale is pre-orders only and all money must be turned in by April 23. No orders will be taken after that date.

 SU Lecture series features EPA scientist

Salisbury University alumna Keyyana Blount speaks about her career as a biologist for the Environmental Protection Agency as part of the Fulton Alumni Lecture Series 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in Conway Hall Room 153.

An environmental studies graduate and 2012 EPA Greater Research Opportunity Fellow, Blount discusses the trajectory of her career and her time at SU. She began her career in federal service at the EPA regional office in Seattle, where she worked in the Watersheds Program focusing on water quality in states throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Blount now works at EPA headquarters in the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water, where she assists states and tribes with implementing the Lead and Copper Rule to promote safe drinking water.

Sponsored by the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts and the Environmental Studies Department, admission is free and the public is invited.

 Ben Layton Race/Walk scheduled May 7

The 17th annual Ben Layton 5k/2-mile walk to support Ben’s Red Swings and the leukemia and lymphoma society will be held Saturday, May 7, beginning at 9 a.m.

The first 150 registrants will receive a pair of custom-made Ben Layton 5k socks.

‘Hoops on the Ave.’ basketball festival set May 28

Three vs. three basketball tournaments. Live music. Arts. Sneakers. These are all part of a new event called Hoops on the Ave., a partnership between Wicomico County Recreation & Parks and the Mizzle House Foundation.

Hoops on the Ave. is an outdoor family-friendly festival celebrating the culture surrounding the sport of basketball. It’s set for Saturday, May 28, outside the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Registration is now open for the event’s 3v3 basketball tournaments, which will feature five divisions: Elite Men’s, Men’s, Women’s, High School and Middle School. Youth divisions must have an adult coach.

Each team is guaranteed three games. Prize money will be awarded in the adult divisions: $1,000 for Elite Men’s and $250 each for Men’s and Women’s. Teams can have up to four members and will play half-court games in the Civic Center parking lot.

Registration is $100 for teams in the Elite Men’s division, $75 for Men’s and Women’s teams, and $50 for High School and Middle School teams. Register by May 13; space is limited.

The festival is free to attend and will include food vendors; interactive art activities; live hip hop, reggae and go-go music; a sneaker marketplace; and a kids’ area.

Wiffle ball tournament returns April 23

 Wicomico Recreation & Parks’ Cabin Fever Breakout Wiffle ball tournament returns for its second year at the Henry S. Parker Complex’s Field 7½.

The two-day tournament will take place April 23-24. Participants must be 16 or older. Teams are guaranteed three games. Rosters are limited to a minimum of four players and a maximum of 10.

Tournament champions will receive a custom trophy and medals. The second-place team will also receive custom medals.

Registration is $90 per team and is open through April 15. Register online at WicomicoRecandParks.org or in person at the Wicomico Civic Center box office (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
