Live theater coming to City Center in Downtown Salisbury

Posted

Live theater will be moving into Downtown Salisbury as soon as this spring when the Milton Theatre opens a satellite location on the third floor of the City Center.

The theater, called Revival, is the latest venture for building owner Bret Davis who also helped launch the popular Mogan’s Oyster House at One Plaza East and who is planning a speakeasy-style bar in the former White & Leonard Office Supply building and a beer garden on a site along the Wicomico River.

“He scouted us and got us to come here,” John Paul Lacap, Milton Theater marketing manager, said of Davis. “We were pretty impressed with what they were doing.”

The City Center space, which is now under construction, will be a different sort of venue for the theater. Instead of traditional theater seating, Revival customers will be seated at tables around the stage.

A full kitchen and bar will provide a variety of food that will be made in-house from locally sourced ingredients, said General Manager Mangus Steed.

“I want the menu to pop,” he said.

The theater could open as soon as late April, but a lot is depending on what Covid-19 restrictions are in place then, Steed said.

Davis said he sees the theater as a good partner to local restaurants and bars, where theater customers can stop for a drink or meal before or after a show. In addition to Mogan’s, there are numerous other eateries and bars within walking distance of the new theater, including Roadie Joe’s on the first floor of the City Center.

“The idea is it’s symbiotic with everything Downtown,” he said.

Revival will offer the same variety of entertainment as the theater in Milton, Delaware, including tribute bands, drag shows and magic acts. In February, the Milton Theatre lineup includes a comedian, a psychic medium and Folsom Prison Revival, a Johnny Cash tribute.

It also offers children’s programs, something that could come to Salisbury if there is enough interest, Steed said.

Anyone interested in performing at the new theater may submit their names on the website revivalshows.com. The website also offers a signup for the theater newsletter.

The theater started in northern Delaware, but moved to Milton in 2014 when officials there approached them with the offer of a theater that had been sitting empty since the 2008 Recession. It now hosts 300 to 350 events a year and has helped turn around Milton’s downtown, Lacap said.

Davis said he hopes Revival will have the same effect on Salisbury.

“I think it’s the perfect timing Downtown,” he said.
