Salisbury became the first city in the United States to be named a World Kindness City for its efforts to officially promote kindness, including appointing an official Secretary of Kindness. Grace Foxwell Murdock, founder of KindSBY, was the first person appointed to the post.

Last week, Murdock passed the torch to Heather Brooks, who was named Salisbury’s second-ever Secretary of Kindness by Mayor Jack Heath.

At a Salisbury City Council meeting, Brooks gave council members an update on recent efforts by KindSBY, a nonprofit which she will now lead.

KindSBY is a kindness community initiative that works to affect positive change in schools, governments, businesses and neighborhoods.

Brooks is an Administrative Assistant for the Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Hub at Salisbury University. Over the past four years, she has served as a kindness commissioner, designed and maintained the kindSBY website and served as the 2022-2023 Adopt-a-School coordinator and the Kindness Palooza volunteer coordinator.

She has also been an advisor for two Kindness Clubs in Wicomico County public schools.
