Andrew Bradshaw resigns as mayor of Cambridge

Special election will be held to fill post

CAMBRIDGE – Andrew Bradshaw stepped down as mayor of Cambridge on Monday.

“Today, I announce my resignation as Mayor of the City of Cambridge. I make this decision after a period of difficult self-reflection and after many hours and days of consideration toward the proper path forward for myself and for the City of Cambridge. Because of the legal matter in which I have been embroiled over the past several months, I no longer have the confidence of my colleagues on the City Council, nor have I been able to maintain the relationships with other local, state, and federal leaders necessary to move Cambridge forward at this time,” Mr. Bradshaw’s statement said. “I apologize to the citizens of Cambridge for having to make this decision.”

An announcement from the city government said a special will be held to fill the post.

Mr. Bradshaw’s legal troubles began on Aug. 4, 2021, when search-and-seizure warrants were served at his office in City Hall and at his home. On Nov. 15 last year, he was arrested on 50 misdemeanor counts of distributing intimate/sex images involving a former romantic partner, according to court records.

The dates of his alleged offenses were listed between April 3 and May 20. Mr. Bradshaw has not been tried or found guilty of a crime.

The photos were posted on multiple Reddit subforums that were identified with derogatory terms, according to documents, and a web address connected to the photos was traced to a residence where Mr. Bradshaw lived.

If convicted, Mr. Bradshaw could face up to two years' imprisonment, a fine of up to $5,000, or both, for each charge.

Three days after his arrest, the city’s commissioners were unanimous in a request for the mayor to resign. His lawyer said at the time that Mr. Bradshaw intended to continue serving the people of Cambridge.

On Dec. 2, the commissioners placed Mr. Bradshaw on leave of absence, during which Commission President Lajan Cephas assumed the duties of mayor. Then on Dec. 13, proceedings were begun by the City Council to remove Mr. Bradshaw from office.

A statement released by the city government around 2:30 p.m. said, “Please be advised that, at approximately noon on Jan. 10, 2022, Andrew Bradshaw tendered his resignation as Mayor of the City of Cambridge. Pursuant to Section 3-21A of the Charter of the City of Cambridge, a special election will be held to fill the unexpired portion of Mr. Bradshaw’s term. Additional information regarding the special election will be made public as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, all rights, powers and duties of the office of Mayor shall continue to be assumed by the Commission President, Lajan Cephas, as provided by Section 3-21A of the Charter.”

Mr. Bradshaw’s resignation comes almost exactly a year after he was sworn into office on Jan. 4, 2021.
