After a year off due to the coronavirus pandemic the Eastern Shore Region District 2 of the American Legion is back with its High School Oratorical Program which can earn a student up to $25,000 in scholarship money.
Public, private and home school students in grades 9-12 in Somerset, Worcester, Wicomico and Dorchester counties are invited to speak from 8 to 10 minutes on the topic of the U.S. Constitution.
The local program is 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Wicomico County Board of Education Complex on Long Avenue and Mt. Hermon Road.
The District 2 winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship ($500 for second) and next compete at the Maryland contest on Sunday, March 6. From there the winner will be entered in the National Oratorical finals Thursday through Sunday, April 22-24 in Indianapolis. The expenses will be covered by the Department of Maryland for the student and one chaperon.
The student registration deadline is Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022. The rules are on the American Legion website https://www.legion.org/oratorical and previous year speeches are posted — including the 2017 runner-up from Maryland, Robyn Anzulis, of Woodbine.
