Speak Up: Milford sets date for referendum to fund improvements for former middle school

Posted

After closing its doors in 2013, the former Milford Middle School could be revitalized and reworked for new generations of students. The Milford School District board of education unanimously approved setting the date for a capital referendum that, if approved by voters, would salvage the historic 1929 Milford Middle School site on Lakeview Avenue and add new structures to “best meet the needs of the 21st century learning environment,” as documents from the board read. The referendum date is set for Oct. 27. If approved, the project could begin as early as fall 2022, with the cost phased in over three years, beginning in fiscal year 2022. The project received a certificate of necessity in November 2020 from the Delaware Department of Education.

  • Love to see this get done. Schools are overcrowded, and the present structure is embarrassing. — Thomas J. Chilton
  • Just more hype. This option was available back then. In fact, it was a possibility for many years before it was closed to students. What has changed? Absolutely nothing. Except the district also got what they wanted back then. I will vote no! Mismanagement and misinformation should not be rewarded. — Dennis Mehrenberg
  • You are willing to punish students for the alleged actions of a previous administration and school board? — Daniel H. Shockley
  • I don’t think that much has changed in either the school administration or the school board. Maybe a few players, but it wasn’t/isn’t a complete sweep. Further, I don’t think the current regime is being all that thrifty or diligent either. In the end, it’s not the students who are being “punished.” It’s the people of Milford and the surrounding area. Democrats pull that “it’s for the children” line all the time. I’m tired of it. I do not have and have never had any children in the Milford district. But I do and have been helping to pay for ineptness. — Dennis Mehrenberg
