Speak Up: Delaware House committee approves permit-to-purchase gun bill

Posted

A House committee, after a lengthy and sometimes fiery hearing, approved legislation Tuesday that would require a permit to purchase a handgun. Following the four-hour meeting, the House Judiciary Committee voted on party lines to release the bill to the floor. Around 60 members of the public, plus a few expert witnesses, testified, with a slight majority speaking against the measure. Another three dozen or so individuals signed up to speak but were unable to due to time constraints. Though the bill was released by the committee, it likely will not be voted on by the full House until an amendment addressing some concerns raised Tuesday is drafted and filed.

  • Completely and utterly wrong. This is a disgusting display of classism, making a constitutional right into a pay-to-play situation. These legislators should be ashamed of themselves. — Joshua Hughes
  • North Carolina had a permit to purchase. They just got rid of it. Another example of legislators doing what they want and to hell with the peasants, regardless of facts or statistics. Newsflash: Democrats have guns, also. — Bob Hice
  • Sadly, Delaware is turning into New Jersey. Wait till they start taxing everything, and property tax goes up to $12,000 a year. — Michael Alamorian Jr.
  • The Democrats are smart! Making it harder for law-abiding citizens to get guns makes the state safer. Now, criminals will be less likely to get shot trying to commit a violent crime against their victim. It’s genius! — Kelly Lord
  • When will they figure out that criminals don’t buy their guns legally? Just another way for the state to grab its citizens’ money. — Donna Oman
