Speak Up: Delaware bills aim to tackle college homelessness

Posted

Legislation filed recently would allocate funding specifically to help homeless college students. House Bill 240 would create a fund to assist “housing-insecure” undergraduate students attending a Delaware institution of higher education. The measure would provide $90,000 for the fiscal year starting July 1, with the monies to be administered by the Delaware State Housing Authority. Under the measure, DSHA is tasked with developing the eligibility criteria and an application process.

  • It is noble to legislate a fund to assist homeless college students, and it certainly is a nice headline-grabber for your reelection. How about establishing a fund for the homeless who don’t have the funds or ability to go to college? Of course, that would just be a great human thing to do and probably wouldn’t help you in your election efforts every two years. — Bob Skuse
  • What about other homeless? — Bob Hice
  • Another step towards socialism, where you become dependent on big government and government becomes your mom and dad. No more welfare for anything. This is still America. — Will Garfinkel
  • Tell that to the farmers that received more corporate welfare than the poor received in social welfare. But no doubt you had no idea how much tax dollars are given to them, no doubt because they look like you, whereas those receiving social welfare in your entitled mind look nothing like you. — Michael Jones
  • Ridiculous. — B.K. Smith
  • If the state of Delaware really wanted to help students, I have a novel idea: Make college affordable. Zero-interest loans would be a start. — Beth Gallagher
  • Hell, they pay for it now. — Bob Hice
  • They pay a premium now. It’s amazing what the government could accomplish if they actually wanted to help. Instead, they do pretend things like this! — Beth Gallagher
