Roundup: Smyrna storms back to edge Milford in last bout

In its last match, the Smyrna High wrestling team lost a heartbreaker in the final individual bout.

On Friday, the Eagles got to be on the other end of an impressive comeback.

Heavyweight Chijioke Eule’s decision in the final match capped a 21-point run that gave Smyrna a big 36-35 victory over Milford in a Henlopen North wrestling showdown on Friday night.

The Eagles (2-1 North, 2-1 overall), who fell to Cape Henlopen by two on Wednesday, reeled off three straight pins — from Shaun Atkinson (182 pounds), Tyler Downward (195) and Kael Howell (220) — before Eule capped off the comeback with a 9-2 decision.

Technically, Smyrna won because the Buccaneers had an unsportsmanlike point deducted earlier in the match. But, even it had ended in a tie, the Eagles would have won the match on criteria.

Smyrna also got pins from Gabe Giampietro (120) and Qwantez Watkins (126).

Milford (3-1 North, 4-2 overall) picked up pins from Emily Thode (106), Jack Thode (132), Ryan Mejia (152) and Averi Copes (160) as it built a 35-15 advantage with four matches remaining. After tallying the match’s first 12 points, the Bucs never trailed until after the last bout.

Woodbridge 65, Dover 18: The Blue Raiders collected six pins in winning their dual-meet season opener.

Patrick Luberisse (120), Cooper Andrews (132), Xavier Dunaway (138), Jaisac Gonzalez (145), Nickolas Akers (160) and Quincy Risper (170) all won by fall for Woodbridge.

Jamar Harris (285) had a pin for the Senators.
