Roundup: Lake Forest opens with 2-0 field hockey win over Panthers

Lake Forest High tallied a goal in the first quarter and another in the fourth to down Polytech, 2-0, in field hockey on Tuesday afternoon.

The Spartans, who were playing their season opener, got goals from Sierra Jester and Brynn String as they beat the Panthers for the first time since 2017.

Goalie Raegan Thomas made 15 saves for Polytech (1-1).

Caesar Rodney 4, Laurel 0: Rachel Smith scored a pair of first-half goals for the Riders (2-0), who posted their second-straight shutout.

McKenna Healy (1 assist) and Peyton Shields also scored for CR, which led 4-0 at halftime. The Riders finished with advantages of 4-0 in shots and 16-0 in corners.

Smyrna 8, Woodbridge 1: Reese Nacrelli scored the Eagles’ first three goals in the victory.

Ryla Wilber added two goals and an assist with Regan Nacrelli, London Bebout and Remington Lewis also scoring for Smyrna (2-0). Halle Geiger made six saves as the Eagles held edges of 20-4 in shots and 10-9 in corners.

Payton Keeler scored a second-quarter goal for Woodbridge with Alyssa Anthony stopping nine shots.

Delmar 11, Wilmington Friends 0: The Wildcats erupted for five first-quarter goals in the win at DE Turf.

Maci Bradford tallied three goals while Jordyn Hollamon had two goals and a pair of assists as Delmar (2-0) got goals from eight players. The Wildcats posted advantages of 25-0 in shots and 14-0 in corners.

Sussex Academy 1, Sussex Central 0: The Seahawks used a second-quarter goal to improve to 2-0.

Milford 11, Seaford 1: Olivia Muir (1 assist), Lila Mergner, Ellie LoBiondo (1 assist) and Madisyn Hitchens all scored twice for the Buccaneers in their win.

Milford finished with advantages of 38-2 in shots and 19-0 in corners.

The Blue Jays’ Madelyn Breitenbach made 25 saves.

Holly Grove Christian, Md. 1, Sussex Tech 1: The Ravens scored in the second quarter before earning the tie with Holly Grove.

Boys’ soccer

Sussex Academy 6, Sussex Tech 0: Michael Daniello collected three goals and a pair of assists for the Seahawks (3-0), who broke open the contest with five second-half goals.

Justin Mendoza Martinez scored twice while Andres Romero (2 assists) also had a goal for Sussex Academy. Tyler Hudson had seven saves in Sussex Academy’s second-straight shutout.

The Ravens’ Anthony Willey made five saves as the Seahawks registered advantages of 17-7 in shots and 10-0 in corner kicks.

Sussex Central 6, Delmar 1: The Golden Knights netted three goals in each half to pick up the victory.

Central held advantages of 23-8 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.

Goalie Carl Kurten had 15 saves for the Wildcats.

Laurel 2, Smyrna 1: The Bulldogs netted a second-half goal to break a 1-1 tie.

Volleyball

Caesar Rodney 3, Delmarva Christian 2: The Riders won the final two sets to pull out the hard-fought 26-24, 21-25, 15-25, 25-21, 15-12 victory.

Alexandra Mardesich had 23 kills for CR with Melissa Eddy adding 17. Makenna Diem had 15 digs, Gabrielle Davis had 26 assists and Lindsey Shuba dished out 20.

Dover 3, Indian River 1: The Senators won the final two sets to earn a 25-19, 24-26, 25-17, 25-13 victory.

Kim Czepukaitis had 11 kills and five blocks, Kendra Williams had 10 kills and five aces and Elizabeth Baughman had nine kills. Olivia Anyanwu dished out 41 assists.

Smyrna 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Eagles won by scores of 25-6, 25-6, 25-8 as Karalyn Osborne collected six kills, seven aces and nine assists.

Mia Schultz added six kills while Anna Richardson had five.

Sussex Tech 3, Woodbridge 1: The Ravens took the victory by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23.

Middletown 3, Sussex Central 0: In a match played on Monday, the Cavaliers won by scores of 25-15, 26-24, 25-23.

Brenya Reid had 19 kills and three aces for the Golden Knights with Madelynn McTeer adding 20 assists.

Archmere 3, First State Military 0: The Auks won the Diamond State Conference match by scores of 25-12, 25-9, 25-4.

College baseball

Phillips joins UMES staff: University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball coach Brian Hollamon has hired Laurel native and former Delaware State pitching star Shawn Phillips as an assistant.

“He played professionally and he played in the MEAC,” Hollamon said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge that will help our team and he understands the rigors of a 50-game college season.”

Phillips, who played for the Hornets from 2002-04 before being drafted by the Texas Rangers, still holds numerous pitching records at his alma mater. He spent the last 10 years working at Laurel and Delmar High, while coaching baseball, softball, cross country and basketball.

“This was the opportunity to get back to baseball and back to the MEAC and Division I baseball,” Phillips said. “It was an opportunity to work with Brian. It’s on the Eastern Shore where I grew up. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

“My years at Delaware State are probably the best three years of my life and they prepared me for what I became. I got to play professional baseball and I just need to share my experience with recruits and parents.”

The Hawks opted out of competition during the 2020-21 athletic season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When they were last in action, they had a 4-11 record when the 2020 baseball season was canceled.

College soccer

MEN, Delaware 1, American 1: The Blue Hens got a goal from Carlos Fernandez in the 57th minute to earn the tie.

Delaware had a chance to win early in the second overtime period when Zach Golden fired a 25-yard shot from the left side, but the ball caromed off the crossbar.

The Hens held a 16-14 advantage in shots, while both teams took three corner kicks. Scott Sampson, making his Delaware debut, stopped seven shots.
