Local Roundup: Lake Forest wrestling team pins down South win

Lake Forest High collected six pins in posting a 58-18 victory over Seaford in Henlopen South wrestling on Monday evening.

The win kept the Spartans (3-0 South, 6-2 overall) unbeaten in the division while the Blue Jays drop to 0-2 in the South, 3-2 overall.

Winning by fall for Lake Forest were Case Dempsey (126 pounds), Cael Moyer (138), Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (152), Cole Dempsey (160), Shawn Ferrell (170) and Cullen Parsell (220).

Registering pins for Seaford were Anthony Andrews (106), Denzel Maker (120) and Sa`muary Long (285) as the Jays held an early lead.

Delaware Military 33, Caesar Rodney 29: The Riders scored the match’s final nine points but couldn’t get any closer in the non-conference loss.

The Seahawks, who had three pins, led 27-18 with four individual matches remaining.

CR got a pin from Cole Moffett (113) in the final match of the night.

Caesar Rodney 84, Dover 0: Cameron Cataldi (138) picked up a 27-second for the Riders in the Henlopen North win on Monday. CR won six matches by fall.

Cape Henlopen 69, Sussex Tech 9: The Vikings stayed undefeated in the Henlopen North with the win on Monday.

Winning by fall for Cape Henlopen were Joshua Alvares-Ramos (132), Andrew Schaen (138), Michael Frederick (145), Joseph McLean (152), C.J. Fritchman (160), Carson Kammerer (170), David DiCampli (182), Alex Taylor (195) and Sean Costello (285).

Boys’ basketball

Caravel Academy 69, Woodbridge 63: The Buccaneers took a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter before holding off the Blue Raiders.

Emmanuel McCrea-Mosley had 21 points for Woodbridge with Bruce Mosley (14) and Kenny Newton (11) also reaching double-digits. The Blue Raiders were 25-of-35 from the foul line.

Delmarva Christian 68, Holly Grove Christian 12: Dontarius netted 16 points for the Royals in the victory.

Girls’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 44, Holly Grove Christian 24: The Royals improved to 8-2 after posting their fourth win in a row on Monday.

Sussex Central 32, Milford 17: The Golden Knights led 16-2 at halftime before picking up the Henlopen North win.

Cross country

Crandell wins Gatorade Award: Indian River’s Brynn Crandell was named the Gatorade Delaware Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

The 5-foot-1 sophomore raced to the DIAA Division II individual state championship this past season with a time of 19:37. Crandell was undefeated on the season, also earning victories at the Salesianum Invitational, the Tidewater Fall Classic and the Sussex County Championships.

Crandell has volunteered locally on behalf of the Indian River Leo Club service organization and her church’s Sunday school.

“Brynn has an amazing commitment to the sport,” said IR coach Rick Hundley. “She has the vision and determination to not only listen to her coaches, but to also plan her future with great organization and detail.”

Crandell has maintained a weighted 4.38 GPA in the classroom.

College basketball

MEN, South Carolina State 64, Delaware State 62: Rahsaan Edwards scored on a fastbreak with just 14 seconds left to give the Bulldogs the MEAC win on Monday night.

The Hornets led by as many as six in the second half and were still ahead 62-61 with 2:57 remaining.

Zach Kent (15), Dominik Fragala (14), Martaz Robinson (11) and Myles Carter (10) led Delaware State, which fell to 0-4 in the MEAC, 2-14 overall.

WOMEN, Drexel 70, Delaware 62: The Dragons outscored the Blue Hens, 18-10, in the fourth quarter to break open a tie game in their CAA showdown on Sunday.

The win left Drexel (6-0 CAA, 14-2 overall) left the Dragons alone in first place. Th Belue Hens are 4-1, 10-5 overall after having a four-game winning streak snapped.

Jasmine Dickey finished with 19 points and eight rebounds to pace Delaware. Tyi Skinner followed with 17 points (4-of-7 from three-point range) while Ty Battle added 13 points and 13 rebounds to post her 10th double-double of the season.

The Hens snapped an 11-game losing streak to Drexel with a pair of regular-season wins only to fall to the Dragons in the CAA tournament finals.

South Carolina State 53, Delaware State 48: The Hornets (0-2 MEAC, 0-11) stayed winless with the MEAC loss on Monday.

Because of injuries, DelState played all five of its starters the entire 40 minutes of the contest. Alexis Moragne (19), Unique Miller (13) and Janasia Law (12) led the Hornets.

College lacrosse

UD men ranked No. 16: The Delaware men’s lacrosse team is ranked No. 16 in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason Division I media poll.

The Blue Hens are scheduled to face a trio of ranked opponents in 2022: at No. 3 Duke (Feb. 22), vs. No. 19 Johns Hopkins (Mar. 20), and at No. 18 Drexel (Apr. 23).
