Local roundup: Caravel puts away Lake Forest in second half 21-0

Caravel Academy scored 21 second-half points to blank Lake Forest High, 21-0, in Class 2A District III football on Thursday night.

Three different players scored touchdowns for the Buccaneers (3-1 District III, 6-1 overall), who bounced back from last week’s loss to Woodbridge.

The Spartans fell to 1-3 in District III, 4-3 overall after losing their second game in a row. Lake Forest plays at Woodbridge next Friday night.

Field hockey

Delmar 6, Smyrna 1: The Eagles scored just the second goal that the Wildcats have allowed this season — and held a 1-0 lead — before unbeaten Delmar (12-0) tallied six unanswered goals to take the win.

Maci Bradford scored four goals with Jordyn Hollamon (2 assists) and Ella Shockley (1 assist) adding the others. Kelly Davis made six saves for Delmar, which finished with advantages of 23-6 in shots and 22-6 in corners.

Dru Moffett scored for Smyrna (10-3), which got 17 saves from Halle Geiger.

Polytech 4, Indian River 3: Kylee LaVere and Madison Lloyd scored goals in the final 4:31 to rally the Panthers to the win.

Lloyd’s game-winner came with 2:21 remaining. LaVere scored twice with Megan Popp adding Polytech’s other goal.

Brynn McCabe scored IR’s first two goals with Emma Ruley giving the Indians a 3-2 lead with 5:50 left.

Caesar Rodney 10, Seaford 0: McKenna Healy scored three goals with Peyton Shields adding a pair of goals and three assists in the Riders’ victory.

Hannah Glanden and Allyson Durham also scored two goals apiece for CR.

The Blue Jays’ Madelyn Breitenbach made 28 saves.

Milford 5, Laurel 0: Natalie Cromer scored the last three goals for the Buccaneers, who led 3-0 after the first quarter.

Lila Mergner and Hannah Zimmerman also scored for Milford, which took 31 shots and 15 corners.

Jillian Harwood made 26 saves for the Bulldogs.

Cape Henlopen 11, Woodbridge 1: The Vikings (11-1) scored four goals in each of the first two quarters to take control.

Samantha Connors (2 assists) and Kelly Bragg scored two goals each as nine different Cape players scored.

Alyssa Anthony had 13 saves for the Raiders, who scored with eight seconds left.

Sussex Tech 4, Sussex Academy 3: The Ravens edged the Seahawks to improve to 9-4.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 2, Delmar 0: Thaddeus Glasser scored in the first half and Derek Hawkins added a goal in the second as the Riders (12-0-1) stayed undefeated.

Kaden Childs made four saves for CR, which out-shot the wildcats, 16-5, and held a 12-2 edge in corner kicks.

Cape Henlopen 6, Lake Forest 1: Nicholas Panyko netted a goal in each half for the Vikings.

Tiarnan Hefferan added a goal and an assist while Dru Schneider made three saves. Cape finished with edges of 18-4 in shots and 9-1 in corner kicks.

Milford 2, Laurel 1: The Buccaneers scored in overtime to raise their record to 7-4-1.

Seaford 4, Dover 3: The Blue Jays out-scored the Senators, 2-1, in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and pick up the victory.

Woodbridge 2, Polytech 0: The Raiders scored twice in the first half before improving to 6-4.

Indian River 7, Sussex Tech 0: Leondardo Chester scored twice for the Indians, who got goals from six different players.

Jose Savala-Saldivar added a goal and two assists while Reece Stone made six saves.

The Ravens got 18 saves from Ronin Mozingo.

Volleyball

Lake Forest 3, Delmar 0: The Spartans earned the Henlopen South victory by scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-10.

Sussex Central 3, Milford 0: The Golden Knights took the Henlopen North victory, 25-5, 25-7, 25-8.

Brenya Reid collected 26 kills and nine kills to lead Central while Katelyn McTeer had 26 assists.

Indian River 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Indians registered the Henlopen South victory by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-19.

Camryn Ehlers (4 aces) and Vasilia Diakos (2 aces) had five kills apiece for IR.

Red Lion Christian 3, Delmarva Christian 0: The Royals (13-3) had their 13-match winning streak snapped as Red Lion won by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-17.

Newark Charter 3, First State Military 0: The Patriots downed the Bulldogs, 25-11, 25-8, 25-6, in a Diamond State match.

College basketball

DSU sixth in MEAC poll: The Delaware State men’s basketball team has been picked sixth in the eight-team Mid-Eastern Athletic pre-season poll.

Pre-season favorite Howard took with 10 of 16 first-place votes.

Delaware State senior guard Myles Carter was named to the Preseason All-MEAC first-team. Carter, a 2020-21 All-MEAC second-team selection, was tops on the Hornets and sixth in the MEAC in scoring at 15.0 points per game.

Hornet women voted 7th: The Delaware State women’s basketball team has been picked to finish seventh in the eight-team MEAC.
Howard is the voters’ choice the win the league title.

Delaware State senior guard Janasia Law is listed as a preseason All-MEAC third-team pick.

UD’s Dickey up for award: Delaware women’s basketball senior guard/forward Jasmine Dickey was named to the preseason watch list for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.

The reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, Dickey averaged 22.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 1.9 assists and 0.6 blocks per game last winter.

College soccer

Delaware State 1, Maine-Fort Kent 0: Late in the first half, Gabriela Cabrera played a through ball from the middle of the field up inside the six-yard box to Mackenzie Burns, who then slipped the ball past the Bengals’ keeper for the contest’s only goal on Wednesday.

Sophomore netminder Ashley Maribo recorded five saves to preserve the shutout.

Delaware 2, Towson 1: The Blue Hens improved to 2-2-2 in the CAA, 5-8-2 overall with the win on Thursday evening.

Kate Henesy’s first goal of the season was the game-winner for Delaware, which also got a goal from Raychel Speicher. Lauren Krinsky became the 14th player in UD women’s soccer history to record 100 career saves.
