Local College Notebook: Hen men’s Towson games are canceled

After going almost a month without playing a game, the Delaware men’s basketball team’s last chance to play in the regular season has now been canceled, too.

The Colonial Athletic Association announced Monday that the Blue Hens’ two-game set with Towson, slated for this weekend, has been canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests within the Tigers’ program.

At the moment, that leaves only the CAA Tournament, which starts on March 6 at James Madison, on Delaware’s schedule. UD has had eight straight games canceled.

The Hens (7-7), who have won three in a row, haven’t played a game since Jan. 31. They’ve had games canceled both because of positive results in other programs and because of positive results in Delaware’s program.

The CAA has been especially hard hit by the pandemic this winter. As of Feb. 14, only 44 of 75 scheduled conference games had been played.

Three of the CAA’s four two-game sets scheduled for this coming weekend have been called off.

Football

Wesley schedule set: Wesley College’s short spring football schedule has been established.

The Wolverines will host Montclair State in a noon scrimmage on March 6; host Salisbury on March 13 at noon; travel to Montclair State on March 20 at 1 p.m.; and travel to Christopher Newport on March 28 at 4 p.m.

Wesley and five other New Jersey Athletic Conference teams are playing this spring after having their fall season wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic. Wesley has also announced that its athletic programs are closing at the end of the spring semester.

Baseball

Keister to manage Harrisburg: Tripp Keister, the former Delaware State and Wesley College baseball coach, will be the manager for the Class AA Harrisburg (Pa.) Senators this summer.

The 50-year-old Keister has coached in the Washington National minor-league system since 2012, managing at the Class A level.

Women’s soccer

LaSalle 9, Delaware State 0: The Explorers tallied four goals in the first half and five in the second to pick up the victory at Alumni Stadium.

Goalie Ashley Maribo made five saves for the Hornets (0-2), who were out-shot, 24-2.

Bowling

Hornets second in MEAC event: Delaware State and North Carolina A&T went down to the wire in the championship match of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference meet on Sunday.

In the end, the Aggies prevailed in a battle of nationally ranked women’s teams.

North Carolina A&T, ranked 13th, defeated the No. 15 Hornets 4-3 in the best-of-seven series to determine the MEAC regular-season champ and top seed in next month’s conference tournament.

Delaware State fell behind 2-0 in the title match before stringing together 30 straight “clean” frames en route to three consecutive wins to pull ahead 3-2 in the series. The Aggies, though, rebounded to win games six and seven to claim the title.

Delaware State had four of the top eight individual scorers, led by junior Stefanny Toala, who was fourth among 29 competitors with a total pinfall of 1,059 for a five-game average of 211.8. Toala topped the 200 mark in each of the last four games, including a season-high 258, second-best among Saturday’s scores.

DSU’s Saralyne Nassberg was fifth in the individual standings with a 1,055 total pinfall (211.0), while Alyssa Breidegam was sixth at 1,042 (208.4) and Kaitlyn Robb eighth with 1,014 (202.8).

Toala and Nassberg were named to the All-Tournament Team for their weekend performances.

Delaware women’s basketball player Jasmine Dickey became the 28th player in program to score 1,000 career points in the Blue Hens’ 65-62 loss at James Madison on Sunday evening. The junior now has 1,002 in her career. ... Towson swept six singles matches and earned a point by taking each doubles contest in a 7-0 women’s tennis victory over Delaware State n the debut of Hornet coach Pavel Zinchenko.
