Literacy Delaware celebrates adult education and family literacy

WILMINGTON — Sept. 19-25, will mark the annual Adult Education and Family Literacy week. In addition to reminding us all that reading, writing, and basic math remain an elusive target for 36 million adults nationwide, including 198,000 adults in Delaware, the week recognizes the impact adult literacy/education programs has in the lives of students and their families.

Literacy Delaware is part of a national network of organizations that work every minute of every day to change lives “one word at a time.”

Literacy Delaware will dedicate the week to celebrating learners, dedicated and passionate volunteer tutors, and raising awareness of the importance of adult literacy and the mission of empowering all Delawareans through literacy.

The organization will be highlighting the stories of three of their learners and their volunteer tutors celebrating a promotion at work, successful self-advocacy for healthcare needs, and paying it forward by helping the next generation improve their chances for success.

Literacy Delaware will be promoting their work through social media and other programming during the week of Sept. 19-25, including an in-person event at the Rodney Square Farmer’s Market in Wilmington on Wednesday, Sept. 22 in partnership with the Delaware Readiness Teams who have donated books to give away.
