Lewis named Delaware State University’s 2023 Distinguished Alumnae awardee

DOVER — Maxine Lewis has been named Delaware State University’s 2023 Distinguished Alumnae honoree.

The 1973 graduate of then-Delaware State College was recognized at the recent Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament, along with alumni from other schools in the conference.

Ms. Lewis was recognized for her career in the mass media and business fields, which began immediately after receiving her degree at Delaware State. That year, she chose to stay at her alma mater to become the first female sports information director at the institution, a post she held for 11 years.

ABC Sports hired Ms. Lewis as a senior sports publicist in 1989, a move that saw her commute from Delaware to New York City by train and subway for 16 years.

“It was certainly a challenge, but I was determined to make it work,” she said. “I was not only representing myself, but I was also representing Delaware State and Black women.”

After her time at ABC, Ms. Lewis established herself as an entrepreneur in Dover, where, partnering with two other women, she opened and still operates Maxine’s Fashions.
