Leadership to remain for Indian River School District board of education

MILLSBORO — Rodney Layfield will continue to hold the gavel as Indian River School District’s board of education president for the 2021-22 year, which began Thursday.

At a board organizational meeting Thursday, Mr. Layfield drew support by an 8-1-1 vote to serve as president. Dr. Heather Statler cast the sole dissenting vote.

Leolga Wright was selected to again serve as board vice president. That vote was 10-0.

Mr. Layfield, a District 2 representative, joined the IRSD board of education in 2010. He previously served as vice president to longtime board president Charles Bireley, who served 43 years. Mr. Bireley’s final term ended July 31, 2020.

“I am very humbled to have served and be elected by my peers to do it,” said Mr. Layfield. “After being Charles Bireley’s vice president for so long, I am happy to say that I got to serve with Charlie and to be the president post-Charlie. I’m humbled to serve, and I will continue to try my best.”

In July 2012, Ms. Wright was appointed to the board to fill out the term of District 3 representative Randall Hughes, who was appointed to the Delaware State Board of Education.
