Kool & The Gang mark return for Dover Downs' concerts

DOVER — Dover Downs Hotel & Casino announced Monday its first live show at the Rollins Center since March 2020.

Kool & the Gang will perform Nov. 13 at 8 p.m.

The last staging at the Rollins Center was the Michael Jackson tribute show, MJ Live, on March 6, 2020. The following week’s show by comedian Jay Mohr was canceled due to the impending COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are thrilled to have Kool & the Gang welcome headline entertainment back to Dover Downs for the Dover and surrounding communities to enjoy. We can’t think of a better way to bring people out to celebrate again than with the timeless music of an American icon,” said Tony Rohrer, vice president and general manager of Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

Banquets and other events should also return to the Rollins Center soon, officials said last week.

“Dover Downs is in the process of rebuilding their event and banquet amenities, and look forward to announcing a return date. They fully intend to bring back the robust offering of banquet services that Dover Downs is known for throughout the industry,” Dover Downs spokeswoman Geralyn Hashway said in an email Friday.

In 1979, Kool & the Gang unveiled a smooth new sound with “Ladies Night,” which became its first platinum album. The No. 1 R&B title track reached No. 8 on the Pop charts, and it was followed by “Too Hot.”

The group’s No. 1 hit, “Celebration,” was played as American hostages returned from Iran and remains de rigueur at joyous occasions worldwide. The smashes, “Get Down on It,” “Take My Heart,” “Let’s Go Dancing,” “Joanna,” “Tonight,” “Misled” and “Cherish,” followed.

Kool & the Gang’s music is also featured on the soundtracks for “Rocky,” “Saturday Night Fever, “Pulp Fiction,” “Wreck-It Ralph” and others. In 2014, the members were honored with a BET Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tickets — which range from $75 to $150 — go on sale Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. here. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the showtime is 8.
