Goal is to bolster police-community relationships
By Glenn RolfeDAGSBORO — The town’s third annual National Night Out will take center stage Oct. 5 with a two-hour event at the Dagsboro Volunteer Fire Department and a mission to strengthen police partnerships in the community.
This year’s festivities, from 5-7 p.m. at the firehouse on Clayton Street, will feature police and fire demonstrations, free food, music/entertainment, door prize drawings, giveaways, local business exhibits and activities for the entire family.
There will be plenty to see and do as Night Out will include the Delaware State Police Trooper 2 helicopter and a K-9 demonstration (both weather permitting), as well as the Delaware National Guard, the Ocean View Police Department, the Selbyville Police Department, the Millsboro Police Department, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the Delaware Department of Correction, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services and the Delaware State Fire School.
In addition, Dagsboro VFD personnel will display their safety house and demonstrate a vehicle rescue.
Coinciding with Night Out is a nonperishable food drive and an opportunity for children to win bicycles and bike helmets.
The raffle will be for one boy’s bicycle and one girl’s bicycle plus helmets, provided by the Dagsboro Police Department. All children are eligible., and winners must be present at the drawing.
Town administration, its police department, the Dagsboro Business Alliance and the fire company are teaming up to stage the Night Out event.
Major sponsors are Pieces on Main, Morse Home Improvement, the Clayton Theatre, State Farm insurance agent Juan Johnson, Myriads Toys & Gifts and Paul Davis Restoration.
Dagsboro Mayor Brian Baull will put on his DJ hat and provide music.
Organizers peg National Night Out as an opportunity for the community to meet neighbors, police, fire and emergency personnel, the business community and town leaders.
“Be part of making Dagsboro a safe and welcoming place to live” is the event’s motto.
