GEORGETOWN — For the second year in a row, two seats on the town’s council will change hands.

This year’s municipal election is May 8, with one contested race and one that’s uncontested.

In Ward 2, Michael DiGiacoma and former Councilwoman Sue Barlow have filed for the seat currently held by Rebecca Johnson-Dennis, who is not seeking reelection.

Ward 1 has one candidate, Christina Malone. Unopposed, she will succeed Steve Hartstein, who is also not seeking another term after having served a decade.

The candidate filing deadline was Friday.

Councilman Hartstein was elected to council in 2011. Councilwoman Johnson-Dennis was elected in 2015.

In 2020, there was a changing of the guard for wards 3 and 4. Angela Townsend was unopposed in Ward 3 to claim the seat held by Chris Lecates, who did not seek reelection. In Ward 4, Penuel Barrett defeated incumbent Bob Holston.

Also in 2020, Bill West was unopposed in earning a fourth term as the town’s mayor.

In Georgetown, both council and mayoral terms last two years.

Polls May 8 will open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.

Voters wishing to cast ballots in this year’s municipal election must be registered to vote with the Sussex County Department of Elections, 119 N. Race St., Georgetown, before May 5. Call 856-5367 for more information.

Any registered voter of the town who wishes to vote absentee may do so by obtaining an affidavit for absentee voting at the town’s Administrative Office.

Once the completed affidavit is received by the town, an official absentee ballot can either be mailed to the resident or picked up at the office.

The deadline for voting by absentee ballot is May 7 at noon.
