GEORGETOWN — The mission of faith-based revival is coming to southern Delaware.

Fire in the Field — a tent crusade featuring former Billy Graham evangelist Frank Shelton and keyboard musician Chris McDaniel, a recovering addict now dedicated to healing programs — will be staged on the grounds of Crossroad Community Church in Georgetown on Sunday through Thursday.

A huge tent will provide covered seating for approximately 1,700 attendees.

The nondenominational event is free, but a freewill offering will be taken each night.

Numerous area churches are involved, said Dale Dukes, who is among the local facilitators.

“We don’t care about denomination. It is nothing about denomination,” he said. “It is just trying to get everybody to come together. We think we’re going to have a big attendance. It looks like right now, it is going to be a pretty big event.”

Pastor Dennis Millner of Bethel Tabernacle Church in Clarksville said the emphasis is “hope.”
“(We wish) to bring the hope of the Gospel to our community in this generation,” he said. “We have over 20 churches that have joined in to make this happen in Sussex County. We’re believing for just a fresh new outlook in our time, that no matter how bad it is, there is always hope. So we’re hoping to bring hope to our community.”

Programs all five nights start at 7. Mr. Shelton and Mr. McDaniel will both be on stage each day.

Mr. Shelton is the former Delaware coordinator for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

“He was with Billy Graham for five years,” said Mr. Dukes. “He speaks all over the world. He has spoken at Nelson Mandela (Bay) Stadium in Uganda. The stadium holds 120,000 people, and it was packed out all three times. He’s known around the world.”

Mr. McDaniel, formerly with the award-winning country group Confederate Railroad, battled drug addiction before he surrendered to Christ.

“He has a powerful testimony of being delivered from cocaine addiction and brings powerful worship,” Pastor Millner said. “So we’re excited about the team that is coming.”

Mr. McDaniel and his ministry group have served for more than two decades in churches, prisons and rehab centers. He is making the trip to Delaware from Georgia.

Mr. Shelton’s busy schedule also includes an Oct. 23 drug-rehabilitation banquet with former major leaguer Darryl Strawberry in Frederick, Maryland.

Crossroad Community Church is located at 20684 State Forest Road, just off Del. 404, several miles west of Georgetown.

The tent revival will return to Delmarva later this month, visiting Cambridge, Maryland, Oct. 24-28.
