DEWEY BEACH — A Dewey Beach police officer was in stable condition Sunday after being knocked unconscious on Saturday night, Dewey Beach police said.

The incident began near the Starboard Restaurant, when the officer was summoned by staff members for an unruly patron. The officer attempted to detain the suspect, Brandon Lewis of Georgetown, for an assault that occurred at the Starboard. A foot chase ensued, which ended at the intersection of Bellevue Street and Coastal Highway, according to authorities.

Witnesses later reported Mr. Lewis, 27, was acting disorderly at the Starboard Restaurant and was removed by the staff, said Dewey Beach Police Department spokesman Sgt. Clifford Dempsey. While being escorted off the property, Mr. Lewis assaulted a staff member and fled, which is when he was observed by the police officer.

An off-duty police officer from the New Castle County Police Department observed the interaction and attempted to assist when he noticed Mr. Lewis was actively resisting. Sgt. Dempsey said. During the struggle, two unknown males pulled the off-duty officer from the altercation.

Moments later police said Mr. Lewis struck the Dewey Beach officer, rendering him unconscious. The off-duty officer from New Castle County then reengaged Mr. Lewis, assisted by a concerned citizen, according to the Dewey Police.

Both were able to restrain Mr. Lewis until responding Dewey Beach police officers arrived. The responding officers reported finding “the Dewey Beach police officer motionless on the ground and a group fighting next to him.”

Both the Dewey Beach officer and the off-duty New Castle County officer were transported to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes for their injuries. The off-duty officer was treated for facial lacerations and released, Sgt. Dempsey said, while the Dewey Beach officer was admitted to the medical center and was being treated for a head injury on Sunday.

Mr. Lewis was charged with two counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, one count of resisting arrest with force or violence, two counts of criminal mischief and two counts of disorderly conduct, Dewey Beach police said. He was transported to Beebe Medical Center for minor injuries and was released before being arraigned at the Justice of the Peace Court #3. He was being held Sunday at the Sussex County Correctional Center on a $35,000 bail.

The Dewey Beach Police Department issued a press release saying it “would like to thank all of the citizens who came to the aid of the officers in a time of need and all other police agencies that responded for support.”
