Country's Allen to perform fundraising show for Heacook's family

DEWEY BEACH — Add country music star Jimmie Allen to the list of those seeking to help the family of late Delmar Police Cpl. Keith Heacook.

Mr. Allen, a Milton native who was named the Academy of Country Music’s New Male Artist of the Year last month, will play a pop-up acoustic show at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bottle & Cork in Dewey Beach.

Authorities said Cpl. Heacook, 54, was attacked after responding to a disturbance at a house in Delmar shortly after 5 a.m. April 25. Doctors at R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore declared him clinically deceased at 12:48 p.m. April 28. At that time, Cpl. Heacook remained on life support, so that his organs could be donated.

Cpl. Heacook, who was married and had a 12-year-old son, was a 22-year veteran of the Delmar Police Department.

In a Facebook video released Tuesday evening from his home near Nashville, Tennessee, Mr. Allen said he had just heard about the tragedy and wanted to help. He gave details about the show and invited people to attend or just drop off donations. All proceeds will go to the family.

“Even if you don’t come to the show and just want to stop by and make a donation, I’m sure the family will appreciate it,” he said.

“I think it’s super-important for our communities and stuff to come together, and even though I don’t live there, Delaware’s still home.”

Tickets, at $10, will be available at the door.

“We’ll play some songs and wish it was a better situation, but we’re going to do all we can to raise money for Officer Heacook’s family,” Mr. Allen said.

The country singer, known for songs such as “Best Shot” and “Make Me Want To,” recently released a duet with Brad Paisley called “Freedom Was a Highway” as part of Mr. Allen’s latest duets project, “Bettie James.”

Mr. Allen will also be touring with Mr. Paisley this summer and fall.

Scholarship fund
Additionally, The Corporal Keith Heacook Memorial Scholarship has been established at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore. The endowment will award a scholarship each year to a Delmar High School graduate who will pursue a career in public service.

“Keith’s service and sacrifice will be honored year after year, serving as a reminder of his legacy,” says Julie Parrish, who helped establish the scholarship fund. “We hope the scholarship will inspire young men and women to serve their community, as Keith faithfully served his.”

To make a tax-deductible contribution to the scholarship fund visit here and select “Corporal Keith Heacook Memorial Scholarship” in the dropdown menu.

Other fundraisers to benefit a trust set up for Corporal Keith Heacook’s 12-year-old son have been created. Contributions to the trust can be made at the Bank of Delmarva or through here.
