Camden-Wyoming hadn’t won a Major League baseball District I title in 20 years.

M.O.T., on the other hand, hadn’t failed to win the district crown for a decade.

With the two leagues meeting in the finals on Thursday night, something had to give.

This time it was Camden-Wyoming that came out on top, downing M.O.T., 5-1, to capture its first district crown since 2001 in Little League’s age division for 11-12 year-olds.

C-W advances to the state tournament, which it is hosting, beginning on July 28.

Camden-Wyoming went 3-0 in the six-team District I tourney, including a pair of wins over M.O.T. C-W allowed a total of only seven runs in its three games.

M.O.T., which had won nine straight district crowns, finished 4-2 in the tournament after winning three games in a row to reach the district finals.

Canal is the champion of New Castle County’s District II and will take on the winner of Sussex County’s District III in the opening game of the state tourney. The state champion receives a berth in Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn.

Major League is the only Little League age division that is holding a World Series this summer, although no international teams will take part. Instead, each of the U.S.’s eight regions will send their top two squads to the World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

American Legion

State tourney on tap: Downstate’s two teams, Fox Post 2 and the Post 6 Patriots, will square off in their opener as the American Legion state tournament gets underway on Saturday.

The six-team, double-elimination tourney is being played at St. Mark’s High.

Fourth-seeded Fox Post 2 (8-7) and fifth-seeded Post 6 (2-11) are slated to play at noon on Saturday. The winner then faces top-seeded Stahl Post 30 (14-4) at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The tournament is scheduled to continue through the championship game on July 29.

The Mid-Atlantic Regional is being played in Asheboro, N.C., starting on Aug. 4. Shelby, N.C. is hosting the World Series this year.

No state tournament was played last summer due to the pandemic.

Softball

Lower Sussex opens vs. N.J.: Lower Sussex will open play in the Major League softball East Regional on Saturday in Bristol, Conn.

The Delaware state champions will face New Jersey champion Robbinsville, N.J. at 1 p.m.

The winner takes on Milford, Conn. on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the 10-team, double-elimination tourney. The loser plays again on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Delmar is the Maryland state champion. It also plays on Saturday, taking on Maine at 4 p.m.

All games in the regional are being shown on ESPN-plus. The East champion earns a spot in the World Series, which is being played in Greenville, S.C.
