90 geese have died after diesel spill at NRG in Millsboro

MILLSBORO — The Sept. 8 spill of 30,000 gallons of diesel fuel at the NRG Indian River Power Plant has been lethal to waterfowl.

While the emergency response phase is over, NRG reported that, according to Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research Inc., about 90 of the approximately 130 impacted Canada geese have died.

“NRG regrets the impact this spill has had on a resident flock of Canadian geese,” said NRG spokesman Dave Schrader. “NRG is deeply appreciative of the Tri-State Bird Rescue and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control for managing that portion of the response.”

Mr. Schrader said NRG is continuing to work closely with multiple agencies to ensure the spill is completely cleaned up and that there are no additional impacts. The overnight accident occurred when a pressurized hose detached from an aboveground storage tank at the plant, near Millsboro.

The spill is currently contained. Initially, DNREC, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the spill.

“We have made great progress already, as a significant amount of diesel fuel has been recovered and removed. We’re confident the oil is confined to our property and has not entered waterways or public lands,” Mr. Schrader said. “NRG takes protecting the environment and complying with all environmental regulations seriously.”
