Roundup: Polytech Panthers roll to Henlopen North win over Cape

Polytech High built a 14-point halftime advantage before registering a 60-43 victory over Cape Henlopen in Henlopen North boys’ basketball on Thursday night.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Panthers (5-4) and gave them their first win since Dec. 29. Polytech, which led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter, evened its North record at 3-3.

The Vikings are 2-2 in the North, 2-3 overall.

Dover 72, Milford 51: The Senators went up 29-14 by halftime before improving to 5-0 in the Henlopen North, 7-1 overall.

Kendal Abrams netted a team-high 17 points for Dover with Noah Allen (12), Jamir Hite (11) and Jaheim Harrell (11) also reaching double figures. The Senators, who have won five games in a row, host Caesar Rodney on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Caesar Rodney 61, Sussex Central 29: Messiah Antwi collected 15 points, 18 rebounds and four blocked shots to pace the Riders to their second straight Henlopen North victory.

Steven Smith also scored 15 points as 10 players netted at least two points apiece for CR. Trey Voshell had six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Riders, who out-scored the Golden Knights, 22-4, in the third quarter.

Smyrna 58, Sussex Tech 21: The Eagles used a 31-6 second-half run to close out the Henlopen North victory.

Seaford 69, Delmar 63: The Blue Jays took a 49-32 advantage into the fourth quarter before holding off the Wildcats.

Careen Bolden collected 14 points and six assists for Seaford with Ty Fortune adding 12 points 12 rebounds.

Takaii Hugee and Emmanuel Ortiz each netted 17 points for Delmar.

Indian River 53, Sussex Academy 14: The Indians outscored the Seahawks, 31-4, in the second half to put away the Henlopen South victory.

Andrew Burns (13), Rashad Hopkins (10) and Jamison Bender (10) all scored in double figures for IR.

Woodbridge 54, Early College 17: The Blue Raiders tallied 19 of the contest’s first 21 points before picking up the Henlopen South win.

Kenny Newton netted 16 points with Emanuel McCrea-Mosley adding 12.

Girls’ basketball

Dover 47, Milford 19: The Senators picked up their second straight Henlopen North victory.

Cape Henlopen 67, Polytech 16: Morgan Mahoney collected 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings in the Henlopen North win.

Elizabeth Rishko added nine points and five steals for Cape, which led 27-2 after the first quarter.

Sussex Academy 34, Indian River 20: The Seahawks posted their fourth win in their last five games to even their record at 4-4.

Seaford 44, Delmar 31: The Blue Jays (7-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season with a Henlopen South win.

Special Olympics

Halley named executive director: The Board of Directors of Special Olympics Delaware has appointed David Halley as its new executive director.

Halley is a longtime Delaware resident and was most recently the executive director of the Middletown Family YMCA.

Halley replaces Ann Grunert, who retired after 34 years in the position.

Dejoun Lee Named a 2021 FCS ADA Academic All-Star

College football

UD’s Lee earns academic honor: Delaware running back Dejoun Lee was one of 50 student-athletes named to the FCS Football Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star team.

Eight Colonial Athletic Associations players made the team, which was the most of any conference.

A second-team All-CAA pick, Lee led the Blue Hens in rushing with 814 yards on 178 carries. He was fourth in the conference with 4.6 yards per carry and 74.0 yards per game, and had four games with at least 100 rushing yards.

Lee also ranked sixth in the CAA with 102.1 all-purpose yards per game. She was also selected as one of the nine finalists for the 21st Annual FCS ADA $5,000 Postgraduate Scholarship.
