OCEAN VIEW — A 55-year-old female was pronounced dead Thursday after what police said was a homicide by shooting.

A 40-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident, Delaware State Police said.

The shooting occurred around 4:21 a.m. in the Bethany Crest development, DSP spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said. Troopers were called to the 30000 block of Bethany Crest and determined that a male suspect had fled in a vehicle.

Shortly after, Cpl. Fournier said, a description of the suspect and the vehicle was broadcast to all Delaware police agencies, as well as surrounding Maryland police departments. Within 10 minutes, a deputy with the Wicomico County (Maryland) Sheriff’s Office located the truck driving erratically on U.S. 50 west in the area of Tilghman Road, DSP added.

The deputy continued to follow the vehicle to a residence in Hebron, Maryland, where the suspect was taken into custody without incident by Wicomico County and Maryland State Police officers.

The male suspect, from Hebron, was in custody and awaiting charges at the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday morning.

The body of the victim will be transported to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy. Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

This case remains an active investigation by the DSP Homicide Unit. Police asked anyone with information to call Detective B. McDerby at 741-2821. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or by visiting here.
