Wicomico State’s Attorney Jamie Dykes will seek a second term as the county’s top prosecutor.

Appointed to succeed Matt Maciarello in 2017 and then elected in 2018, Dykes is a Republican seeking a second term.

“It has been my honor to serve as your State’s Attorney. We have accomplished a great deal over the last three years, but there remains important work to be done,” she said in a campaign announcement.

“While the world is a different place than three years ago, the principles that sustain us are not: accountability, integrity and justice,” she said. “My commitment to you, your family and our community, is unwavering, and I look forward to continuing the great work we started.”

Over the last two years, Dykes’ office has been tasked with reviewing cases related to a scandal within the Salisbury Police Department Evidence Room.

Hundreds of criminal cases are being reviewed by a Prosecutorial Integrity Unit appointed by Dykes. Every criminal case that used evidence stored by Salisbury police from April 22, 1997, through Feb. 7, 2020, is being examined.

Dykes secured additional money from the county to hire three long-term investigators to review a slew of previous cases.

Born in Wicomico County, Dykes attended Parkside High School and received a bachelor’s in Accounting in 2001 from Salisbury University. She graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2005.

She served as Senior Assistant State's Attorney in Wicomico County from 2006-15, before joining the Salisbury law firm of Long, Badger & Sheller.

She was a Deputy State's Attorney in Dorchester County when she was picked by a judges’ panel to replace Maciarello, who had been appointed a Circuit Court judge.

Dykes applied in 2020 for a judgeship that ultimately went to Karen Martin Dean.

No Democrat has yet to announce for the post. Dyke defeated Salisbury defense lawyer W. Seth Mitchell in the 2018 election.
