Wicomico Sheriff Mike Lewis files for re-election

Posted

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis has officially filed for a fifth term in office.

Among the top vote-getters in county electoral history, Lewis’ career-path decision is regularly anticipated, as he is often regarded as a potential candidate for County Executive or the Maryland General Assembly.

Lewis succeeded Hunter Nelms -- who died earlier this year -- as sheriff in 2006.

In a news release, Lewis said seeking re-election was “an easy decision after seeing the office’s successes against both drug traffickers and violent criminals.”

“When I began I had a simple goal: to make Wicomico County the best place to live for our hard working citizens and the worst place to live for criminals that were intent on preying on our citizens, especially our youth,” Lewis said.

He has overseen an expansion of the Sheriff’s Office, adding deputies and increasing the county’s role in law enforcement. He has also been credited with making technological upgrades to the office and increasing the diversity of new hires.

During his tenure, he has directed implementation of a new Criminal Investigative Division, Collision Reconstruction Unit and the only Motorcycle Unit on the Eastern Shore.

The Sheriff’s Office has also augmented the Emergency Response Team and K-9 Unit.

In 2014, his office deployed a Community Action Team to help address the opioid crisis within Wicomico County.

“I will continue to fight the decriminalization of illicit drugs, such as heroin and cocaine,” Lewis said. “Together, we have made incredible progress, but hard work and challenges remain.”

While implementing a coordinated effort of proactive enforcement, education and prevention, Wicomico County has been able to tackle the problem of illicit drugs in our community which has yielded a significant reduction in opioid related overdoses.
