Wicomico Recreation: Turkey Trek is Thanksgiving Day

The annual Turkey Trek is back this fall along with the return of the Wicomico Youth Basketball League.

Registration for programs is available online at WicomicoRecandParks.org and in person at the Wicomico Civic Center Box Office (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and. To stay up-to-date on our programs, follow us on social media at @funwicomico.

Turkey Trek 5K

Start Thanksgiving morning on the trails of Pemberton Park by running or walking the Turkey Trek 5K. The race is Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, Nov. 25. Enjoy refreshments and pie after crossing the finish line.

Registration is available online for $35. The guaranteed shirt deadline has passed.

The race begins at 8 a.m. On-site registration will take place from 7-7:30 a.m. and pre-registered runners should check in starting at 7 a.m.

Before the race, there will be a group warm-up with Kate James of Driven Physiotherapy. There will be age group awards and a Thanksgiving costume contest.

 Youth Basketball

The Wicomico Youth Basketball League returns for the 2021-22 season. This volunteer coach-led league focuses on age-appropriate skill development, basic terminology and fundamentals of the game of basketball.

WYBL is coed, and there are four divisions: Division I is for kids in kindergarten and first grade, Division II is for kids in second and third grades, Division III is for kids in fourth and fifth grades, and Division IV is for kids in sixth through eighth grades.

Registration is open now through Dec. 20 or until registration fills. The season begins Jan. 4, 2022. Division I is $45 per player and Divisions II-IV are $60 per player.

 Governors Challenge

Governors Challenge, the largest high school holiday basketball tournament in the country, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The basketball tournament returns to the Wicomico Civic Center and surrounding locations Dec. 26-30.

More than 115 teams will take the courts throughout the week. Don’t miss the fan favorite and always highly anticipated Dunk Contest happening on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
