 Youth Basketball League

The Wicomico Youth Basketball League returns for the 2021-22 season. This volunteer coach-led league focuses on age-appropriate skill development, basic terminology and fundamentals of the game of basketball.

WYBL is co-ed, and there are four divisions: Division I is for kids in kindergarten and 1st grade, Division II is for kids in second and third grades, Division III is for kids in fourth and fifth grades, and Division IV is for kids in 6th through 8th grades.

Registration is open now through Dec. 20 or until registration fills. The season begins Jan. 4, 2022. Division I is $45 per player and Divisions II-IV are $60 per player. Visit the Wicomico County Recreation & Parks website for more details on the program, including preseason assessment dates.

 Governors Challenge

Governors Challenge, the largest high school holiday basketball tournament in the nation, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The basketball tournament returns to the Wicomico Civic Center and surrounding locations Dec. 26-30.

A total of 120 teams will take the courts throughout the week. Don’t miss the fan favorite and always highly anticipated Dunk Contest happening on Wednesday, Dec. 29. To see the full tournament schedule and learn more, visit GovChallenge.org.

 Co-ed Volleyball

Get your friends together and enter your team in the Adult Co-ed Volleyball league. The season begins Jan. 9,  and games will be played Sunday afternoons at the Richard Hazel Youth Center at Billy Gene Jackson Sr. Park.

Players must be 15 or older. Registration is open now and is $300 per team.

 ESEVA Instructional Program

The Eastern Shore Elite Volleyball Academy Instructional Program offers players in grades K-12 a non-competitive environment that promotes skill mastery and life skill development. With two age groups there is a level suitable for all players.

Chris Emge will be directing the program. Sessions occur on Wednesday nights, Feb. 2 through March 9 at Bennett Middle School. Registration is $60 per player.

James Simmons is the Recreation Superintendent for Wicomico County’s Parks & Recreation Department.
