Wesley adds grid game; DelState loses one

DOVER — It seems only fitting that the Wesley College football team should play its final game on Drass Field.

That’s what is slated to happen now that the Wolverines have added a home game with Stevenson as their spring season finale. The contest is scheduled to be played on April 9 at 7 p.m.

Delaware State, on the other hand, has lost one of its spring football games.

The Hornets’ game at MEAC rival Howard, slated to be played on Saturday, has been postponed because of COVID issues within the Bison’s program. The contest was slated to be aired on ESPN-3.

Right now, the game is listed as ‘postponed.’ However, Howard’s only other remaining spring game, against South Carolina State on April 10, is listed as canceled.

Delaware State (1-1) does have two games remaining — at home against Delaware on April 10 and at home against South Carolina State on April 17.

The postponement means that the Hornets will go almost a month — from March 13 to April 10 — without playing a game. Delaware beat Howard, 17-10, in its spring football opener in Dover on Feb. 27.

Wesley (1-1) was scheduled to play the program’s last game on Sunday when it goes to Christopher Newport for a 4 p.m. contest. But adding the Stevenson contest gives the Wolverines the chance to finish up at home.

Stevenson head coach Ed Hottle was Wesley’s linebackers/defensive line coach under Drass from 2002-04.

The Wolverines last faced the Mustangs in the 2016 NCAA Division III playoffs with Wesley posting a 38-17 victory.

Wesley is closing its athletic programs at the end of the school year.

Neither Delaware State or Wesley played football this past fall because of the coronavirus pandemic.
