DOVER — A 28-year-old Dover man was arrested on weapons charges following a Thursday traffic stop, authorities said.

According to Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman, driver Jawan Custis was stopped for a seat belt violation at approximately 8:22 p.m. in the area of Simon Circle and Slaughter Street. Police said the passenger in the vehicle told officers he had marijuana on him.

During a vehicle search, police located a 9 mm handgun under the driver’s seat, Sgt. Hoffman said. Both occupants were taken into custody without incident.

The passenger was released after receiving a civil violation for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, along with having a warrant.

Mr. Custis was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and possession of ammunition by a person prohibited. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on a $23,000 secured bond.
