Violet M. Testerman of Harrington, DE, passed away, on Monday, November 11, 2024. She was born on March 2, 1936 in Wythe County, VA. Violet graduated from Rural Retreat High School in 1953 and went on to study English and Physical Education at Roanoke College receiving her B.A. in 1957. While in college, Violet earned 8 varsity letters and was named to the Blue Ridge Field Hockey team; she also played four years of basketball. She was inducted into the Roanoke Hall of Fame in 1976.
After college graduation, Violet taught five years at Marion High School in Marion, VA. She moved to Delaware in 1962 and began teaching at Harrington High School until the consolidation after which she began teaching at Lake Forest High School. In 1971, she left Delaware to attend Appalachian State University, where she obtained her Master’s degree. She also attended Indiana University, where she worked toward obtaining her PhD. She then returned to Harrington and taught at W. T. Chipman until she retired in 1997. She coached for 19 years and had conference champions in field hockey, basketball, softball, track, and volleyball.
Violet was a beloved sister and also a beloved aunt to all of her nieces and nephews who affectionately called her "Buddy”. Violet was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Dorcas (Steffey) Testerman; sisters, Lena M. Testerman and Patsy Testerman; brothers, John Testerman, Floyd R. Testerman and Douglas L. Testerman; and greatnephew, Micah Glidewell.
She is survived by her brother, James B. Testerman (Barbara) of Harrington; sister, Carolyn Huddle of Roanoke, VA; nieces and nephews, Steven Testerman of Maryland, Rebecca Wilson (Dean) of Maryland, Jimmy Bales of Roanoke, VA, Patty Huffman (Doug) of Roanoke, VA, Laura Testerman Renshaw (Jerry) of Austin, TX, Sandra Ryder (Greg) of Milford, DE, April Wright (Kevin) of Felton, DE, Terri Alley (David) of Catawba, VA, and Deanna McFarland (Rob) of Inwood, WV. Also surviving are 13 great-nieces and nephews and 6 great-great nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service for Ms. Testerman will be on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE, at 3 PM. A public visitation will be one hour prior at 2 PM.
The family will also receive friends on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 12 PM to 1 PM at Lindsey Funeral Home, 219 N Main St., Rural Retreat, VA. Funeral Services will begin at 1 PM. Interment will be immediately following the services at Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rural Retreat, VA.
