MIDDLETOWN - Two persons suffered non-life threatening injuries when shot in the area of Appoquinimink High School on Friday night, authorities said.

Middletown police said officers heard shots fired at approximately 9:15 p.m. and said the incident occurred in the area of Bunker Hill Road and Choptank Road.

The victims were located in the area and transported to Christiana Hospital for treatment, Middletown police said.

Appoquinimink High School hosted Middletown High School in an intra-district rivalry football game on Friday night.

No victim or suspect information was available at the time of a news release.

The Middletown Police Criminal Investigation Unit continues to investigate this case. Police are asking anyone who witnessed this incident to contact Detective Womer at 302-376-9950 or via email at jwomer@middletown.delaware.gov.

Information may also be provided by contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at delawarecrimestoppers.com.

On its Facebook page, the  school district posted a message that read:

"On Friday evening, an incident occurred off school property, on Bunker Hill Road, with injuries involved. The State Police are investigating and have asked anyone with information to contact the Delaware State Police’s main number."

On Saturday morning, Delaware State Police spokesperson Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said Middletown police are investigating the incident and  directed a request for any further information to that department.

Plans were made to limit attendance at Saturday's Archmere versus Howard football game in Wilmington.

A post on Archmere's Facebook page read:

"Following the incident yesterday at the Appoquinimink vs Middletown game, (the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association) has taken precautions to limit spectators for tonight’s game at Abessinio Stadium against Howard.

"No spectators will be allowed at the game except for two adults per rostered football player and cheerleader. There will be no entry after the second quarter."
