GEORGETOWN — Two of four council seats on the town of Georgetown’s governing body are up for election this spring.

The municipal election, if needed, will be held Saturday, May 8 with voting for registered voters at town hall from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Council terms expiring this year are Ward 1, presently held by Steve Hartstein, and Ward 2, held by Rebecca Johnson-Dennis.

Mr. Hartstein first elected in 2011 and Ms. Johnson-Dennis was elected to council in 2015.

Council and mayoral terms in Georgetown are for two years.

Any qualified candidate interested in filing for these offices may do so at the Town Hall. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, April 16.

Candidates must be 21 years of age or older, a U.S citizen, a bona fide resident of Georgetown and reside in the council ward for the elected office they are seeking.

Voter registration must be in before May 5, with the Sussex County Department of Elections, 119 N. Race St., Georgetown DE 19947. The Department of Elections phone number is (302) 856-5367.

Absentee voting will be offered for any registered voter of the Town of Georgetown. An “Affidavit for Absentee Voting” can be obtained at the Town Administrative Offices, and absentee ballots will be available Friday, April 16. Absentee ballots can either be picked up at the Town Administrative Offices or mailed. The deadline for voting by absentee ballot in person is Friday, May 7, at noon.

In Georgetown’s 2020 election, postponed from the traditional May date to August due to the pandemic, Bill West was unopposed in securing a fourth term as town mayor while Angela Townsend and Penuel Barrett secured council seats.

Ms. Townsend (Ward 3) was not challenged in succeeding Chris Lecates, who did not seek re-election, while Mr. Barrett (Ward 4) defeated Bob Holston 211 to 184 in the only contested race.
