CLAYMONT — Delaware State Police arrested 28-year-old Brian Caldwell of Chester, Pennsylvania, on drug and weapon charges following a traffic stop Sunday.

According to spokesman Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell, a trooper conducting a proactive patrol in the parking lot of a Wawa store, at 21 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, observed a black BMW M5 exiting the lot with illegal window tinting at approximately 11:10 p.m. The trooper initiated a traffic stop after the vehicle failed to properly use a signal while making a turn, Cpl. Hatchell said.

The officer detected an odor of marijuana from the vehicle, which was being driven by Mr. Caldwell, authorities said. An investigation ensued, and a search was conducted, yielding a loaded Glock 19 handgun, one-and-a-half Xanax pills and drug paraphernalia, Cpl. Hatchell said.

Mr. Caldwell was taken into custody without incident and charged with felony possession of a fireman by a person prohibited, felony carrying of a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, failure to signal and improper window tinting. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $8,700 unsecured bond.
