DOVER — A 15-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a shooting incident that left an elderly man injured by a stray bullet on May 22, authorities said.

The Tuesday morning arrest was made after detectives reviewed surveillance video of an incident in a parking lot in the 1000 block of S. Little Creek Road, according to Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman. Other persons seen in the video have not been identified and investigation continues, police said.

The juvenile, who police did not publicly identify, was taken into custody by Dover police and the U.S. Marshals 1st State Fugitive Task Force in the 400 block of Barrister Place, authorities said.

Charges included second-degree assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of firearm by person prohibited, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and second-degree conspiracy. The youth was committed to a juvenile detention center on a $5,000 secured bond.

According to police when announcing the incident, officers were called to the scene at approximately 11:39 a.m. for a reported fight. Police determined that a woman sprayed pepper spray at a man she was arguing with, along with two other persons. Gunshots were heard in the area shortly afterward, police said.

The woman involved was charged with three counts of second-degree assault and a count of disorderly conduct.

More than six hours after the incident, police learned that a 73-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back was at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, Sgt. Hoffman said. The wounded man said he watched a confrontation before hearing multiple gunshots and then feeling like a “ball hit him,” authorities said.

According to Sgt. Hoffman, “The victim went home and later realized that he was struck by gunfire and went to the hospital where he was being treated for a non-life threatening injury.”

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call 736-7130. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips may also be submitted to law enforcement through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or online; a cash reward is possible for information leading to an arrest.
