CRISFIELD — Roaring back after a year of lockdowns and COVID-forced closings and limitations the J. Millard Tawes Museum has freshly stocked its gift shop and updated the exhibits to welcome back visitors for the 2021 season.
View exhibits of vintage oyster cans, model workboats, decoy carving tools and old hunting rifles. Relive Crisfield’s heyday, when seafood businesses and oyster-shell mountains crowded the shoreline and the railroad linked local products and people with major East Coast cities.
A new display honoring Crisfield’s native son, Maryland Gov. J. Millard Tawes (1894-1975), will be showcased. The old-time Crisfield Christmas exhibit remains on view as well.
Crisfield heritage-themed cookbooks, Christmas ornaments and prints are available in the gift shop. Book lovers will enjoy an array of titles covering local history and culture, as well as Chesapeake Bay environmental concerns. The Spat Spot is just for the kids, featuring sea-inspired toys and books.
“Consider setting aside a half-hour to support your local, non-profit museum,” says Nancy Smoker, board chair of the Crisfield Heritage Foundation, which administers both the museum and the Ward Brothers Workshop. “The museum, gift shop and workshop are also great places to bring your summer guests.”
The museum and gift shop, located at the end of Ninth Street at Somers Cove Marina, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 2. The Ward Workshop on Sackertown Road is open selected days, from 10:30 to 2.
