Sussex County Genealogical Society to meet Feb. 18

Posted

LEWES — The Sussex County Genealogical Society will hold its general meeting at 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at the Lewes Public Library.

Members are encouraged to attend and participate in person or virtually. They will automatically be sent a link to join via Zoom.

Nonmembers also are welcome to attend and may request a link by emailing programs@scgsdelaware.org no later than Feb. 14.

The topic will be “Using Genealogy Newsletters for Research” by Suzan Bates.

The Periodical Source Index (PERSI) and the American Genealogical-Biographical Index are two finding aids for location information in history centers’ and/or genealogical societies’ newsletters. Transcriptions, including civil records, family Bible pages and tombstones are just some of the sources embedded in these newsletters, which were a mainstay of genealogy research before computers.

Ms. Bates has been researching her family history for over 45 years. After a career in education, she now combines teaching skills with extensive genealogy research experience and training as a presenter, researcher and consultant.

Her presentation specialty is step-by-step instructions for various researching, archiving and technology skills for genealogists and family historians.
