Local Roundup: Sussex Central girls post North win over Smyrna

Sussex Central High pulled away in the fourth quarter to register a 37-24 win over Smyrna in Henlopen North girls’ basketball on Monday night.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Golden Knights (7-6), who beat the Eagles for the second time this winter. Sussex Central closes the regular season on Thursday at Caesar Rodney.

Smyrna (4-9) plays at Dover on Thursday in its regular-season finale.

Cape Henlopen 62, Dover 28: The Vikings outscored the Senators, 24-8, in the fourth quarter to close out the win.

Henlopen North champion Cape Henlopen (13-0) will play in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at Dover High at 1 p.m. The Vikings, who have captured three straight North crowns, have won 31 games in a row against Henlopen North teams.

Caesar Rodney 71, Sussex Tech 50: Jada McCullough scored 27 points and Stacey Deputy added 25 to lead the Riders to the Henlopen North win.

Alexia Jordan added 12 points for CR, which finished the contest on a 15-6 run to top off the victory.

Polytech 46, Milford 16: Jazmin Kellam (14), Jayla Scott-Cottman (12) and Kallie Hopkins (11) all finished in double figures for the Panthers.

Polytech out-scored the Buccaneers, 27-4, in the second half.

Seaford 53, Sussex Academy 24: The Blue Jays (5-6) out-scored the Seahawks, 17-4, in the fourth quarter before winning their third game in a row.

Caravel 66, Indian River 17: Lauren Meehan tallied eight points for the Indians in the non-conference loss.

Boys’ basketball

Smyrna 67, Sussex Central 36: The Eagles outscored the Golden Knights by a combined 45-19 in the first and third quarters as they clinched the Henlopen North title.

Smyrna is 13-0 in the division and closes the regular season on Thursday night at Dover. The North championship is the Eagles’ third in the last five seasons.

Smyrna will play in the Henlopen Conference title game on Saturday at Dover at 4 p.m.

Senior Olumuyiwa Salako tallied 26 points in Monday’s win with Robert Wiley adding 10.

Dontae Spencer scored 11 points for Sussex Central.

Dover 73, Cape Henlopen 67, OT: Sophomore Jaheim Harrell poured in a career-high 35 points as the Senators (10-2) won their sixth game in a row.

With the contest tied at 57-57, Dover netted the first five points of overtime and never trailed again. The Senators (10-2) led by as many as nine points in OT, hitting 12-of-15 foul shots in the extra four-minute period.

Amir Hite (14) tallied seven of Dover’s 16 overtime points.

The game was close throughout, with the Vikings leading by one at halftime and by two going into the fourth quarter.

Caesar Rodney 63, Sussex Tech 31: The Riders led 37-17 by halftime before improving 8-4.

Brycen Williams (18) and Jaelin Joyner (10) both reached double figures as 10 CR players scored in the contest.

Polytech 69, Milford 44: The Panthers outscored the Buccaneers, 36-17, in the second half before improving to 4-6 with their second straight win.

Delmar 68, Odyssey Charter 30: Davin Chandler and Jeremiah Lumpkin-Beale netted 15 points apiece to pace the Wildcats.

Cameron Bozman added 11 points for Delmar (8-3), which won its second game in a row.

Caravel 55, Indian River 42: The Buccaneers built a 27-15 halftime advantage in the win.

Brendon Bradford and Gage Spinks scored 11 points each for IR.

Henlopen title games scheduled: The Henlopen Conference basketball championship games will be played on Saturday afternoon at Dover High.

North champion Cape Henlopen will face the South champion in the girls’ title game at 1 p.m. while North champion Smyrna will take on the South champion in the boys’ contest at 4 p.m. The gym will be cleared out between games for cleaning.
