GEORGETOWN — Sussex Academy 11th-grader Mikayla Dayton has been selected as a 2021 Carson Scholar. With this honor, Dayton will receive a $1,000 scholarship that will be invested for her college education.

The Carson Scholar fund awards scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedication to serving their communities. Students must be nominated by a school educator, have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities.

In the last two years, Mikayla, a Seaford resident, has participated in numerous extra-curricular activities both in and out of school:

Team member for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Service Project (2020); Sussex Academy El Club de Español, Student Teacher (2020 2021); Miss Seaford 2019; 2021 Miss DE’s Outstanding Teen Candidate; Sussex Academy Cooking Club, Founder (2021); Sussex Academy Drama Club, Head Costume Designer (2020, 2021); Sussex Academy Creative Writing Club, President and Founder (2020, 2021); Sussex Academy Green Team, Social Media Manager (2020, 2021); Sussex Academy Class of 2022 Council, Vice President (2021), Historian (2020); Sussex Academy National Honor Society (2020, 2021); Sussex Academy Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society (2020, 2021); Possum Juniors, Artistic Committee Member (2020, 2021); Youth in Government, Press Delegate (2021)

Due to COVID-19, the Carson Scholar spring regional award ceremony has been postponed. Mikayla and her parents Brian and Rita Dayton, will be invited to attend the re-scheduled event this fall.
