PRINCESS ANNE — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Foreign Language Instructional Center will hold language day camps in both Japanese and Chinese this summer. The two programs will run simultaneously, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 11-22. Students entering 8th through 12th grades this fall are eligible to participate.

The UMES “Summer Language Experience” will not only offer basic language skills, including reading, writing and grammar, but the programs will also give campers a unique international experience with activities that explore the country and its culture. Both the Chinese and Japanese students will learn about storytelling through anime and try their hand at the ancient Asian art of calligraphy.

Each two-week camp costs $300 for ten days of instruction, including supplies and materials, lunch in the campus cafeteria, and a subscription to a popular online learning program with access to dozens of languages. Interested participants can register by calling 410-651-7595.

The Foreign Language Instructional Center began offering language day camps in 2012. In past sessions, local students have received instruction in Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. Previous language campers have represented public, private and home school students from Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset counties.
