State fire marshals investigate Dewey Beach house fire

DEWEY BEACH—The State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire that took place in Dewey Beach Saturday morning.

The fire, which was reported just after 3 a.m., occurred in the 1900 block of Bayard Avenue, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio. Authorities said the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company and 12 other fire companies responded to the call with a house engulfed in flames.

As a result, three homes and four vehicles were destroyed by the fire, which occured in the area of 124 Bayard Ave. and  Swedes Street.

All residents safely evacuated prior to the arrival of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company and no injuries were reported. Approximately 75 firefighters battled the blaze for over five hours.

State fire marshals were investigating the origin and cause of the fire Saturday. No injuries were reported and fire damage from the incident is expected to exceed $1 million, according to Mr. Chionchio.
